when i was growing up, i was taught if a dog tries to be dominant with you, to bite it in the snout. not hard enough to take a chunk of meat out but enough to cause pain. i dont agree with that idea but if you think of the way dogs bite and fight for dominance, it works. and ive seen a man bite a dog like that once, damn straight it worked.

Seems to me  OP is kind of a dumb ass that should not even have a goldfish. Not to mention the dog is probably inbred, Happens a lot with those small breeds. OPs reaction is like getting mad at  an autistic person for throwing a fit. I feel worse for the dog having a stupid owner. :psycrankey:

That dog looks like a small white furry orc, sorry OP but those kinds of dogs are ugly as hell and sooooo annoying  Usually have the biggest case of little man(dog) syndrome ever.

Didnt read through this thread but seriously OP wtf is wrong with you?

Dont put your dog down,  you even said yourself, it hardly grazes you and draws blood.

I tackle my dogs and they scratch me and draw blood.

You got a 17lb dog "graze" for the 9th time.  Jesus my chihuahua bites my ankles everytime I tell him we are going on a car ride.

I don't understand this thread at all.

I don't think I would even notice if that thing bit me. I'd probably laugh at it and slap it in the face.

There is no reason the dog has to be put down because it nipped you a couple times, especially when it's such a little shit dog that can't do damage.

I don't want to sound like I abuse dogs or some shit but it's just a tiny dog, I'd grab it by the back of the neck and yell at it or something. if this thing was a full sized dog I would be more understanding of OP. I got bit by a pitbull and rottweiler at the same time in my hands (got inbetween them fighting). But the thing is practically an ankle biter, shih tzus look like hairy gremlins to me.

Dogs can bite in frustration, fear, excitement,  anger etc.....why does everyone assume smacking it will help.
The advice is very simple.  Stop kissing its face. Little terriers and other annoying dogs tend to be more nippy. Respect it's personal space. Other things will be sufficient for punishment if absolutely necessary.  Water pistols can work very well. Also give the dog boundaries too. If you really want to kiss the dog. Reinforce the act with treats...

Disagree with your second sentence, agree with the rest.

It's called conditioning. Animals learn that when an action causes them pain, they will no longer commit that action.

Sorry, but if a dog bit me I would have a hard time not smacking it back out of retaliation. Now if I was doing something that the dog has shown not to enjoy (like OP's need to continue kissing his dog on the head even though it will bite him ) and got bit, then it's my own fault.

Sure. But I'm going to go ahead and guess that you've never dealt with some real troublesome dogs. Some will just become more aggressive. ...why would you want to smack a scared dog biting from fear?  Would you do the same to a child? Everyone is all badass. The dog is warning you with a small bite. Not attacking you. So it's not biting out of rage. If half you guys took on a raging doberman you'd be fucked. They go for your neck...not a small hand or ass bite.
Beaing a dog isn't the answer to all your problems

I'm about to just show this discussion to her; I personally think she is overreacting. We baby that dog, I pick her up, she picks her up, she sleeps on beds, sits on couches, sits on chairs, is carried around, etc. The bud and all of your comments really helped me think things through and instead of being all sad I am presenting examples of what we do to promote her behavior to my mom. Her argument is that it will inevitably happen again and will probably be alot worse. She wants to baby the dog though. I told her last night stop picking up the dog and kissing it and putting it on the bed but she goes "I did this with all my other dogs and they never did this"

Its going to be difficult but the Health Department of PA called and said she will be quarantined here for 10 days, hopefully buying me time.

Anticlimactic as shit though because that won't turn out to be her last walk

Thats what happens to her. She gets more agressive. If she growls and I say no, she growls louder. If I smack her upside the head and pick her up by the scruff of the neck and then put her on her back, she still growls and as soon as I let her go she gets angry again and nips. If I put her in her cage because she did bad she will go balistic.I'll try the spray bottle.

Try the spray or put her outside.  Ignore her completely.  Also reward good behaviour.  You need to do some reading and seek advice outside of the shroomery.
Too many badasses here....

If id have to guess I would say she is asserting her dominance over your mother. She is protective of your mum. Have to reinstate your roll. Not through hitting. Seek advice...

Yes, I have dealt with troublesome dogs.

So now you know the dog is biting out of fear? :horly: You have no idea if the dog is biting out of anger or fear, or if it just has a brain tumor that makes it bat shit insane.

Yes, I would probably smack a small child for biting me. In fact, my uncle did the same thing to me when I was a toddler and guess what? I never bit him or anyone again.

Dobermans must be some smart dogs brah, only going for your neck and all.

There is a difference between beating a dog and physically disciplining it. Beating implies a continued assault.

Do you read at all or just puff your chest and type? Since you're so good at this...why do all the obedience trainers and dog behaviour therapist with very successful results not hit the dogs?
Why is it that many children who have problems that are hit just get worse.  You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. You couldn't sort a trounked dog dude. You would end up making it worse...getting bit real bad and cause the demise of the dog through your own retarded bravado.
A hit can work at the right time. This clearly isn't one.

Nope, I didn't read it. Just puffed my chest out and magically knew what you wrote so I could respond to it.

I've been bitten by dogs before, too lazy to explain, but I definitely smacked both of them in the head. The dogs didn't "get worse."

Once again, there is a difference between physical discipline and "beating," as you worded it.

And this guy tried with his dog and it didn't work...he tried multiple times. .

So what now? Hit her harder or more often?
Let's have it

Where did he say that?

In his original post he says "We have tried dog obedience, dog trainers and the like." Only later in the thread he says he tried grabbing the dog and saying no, but that's not actually hitting it.

Sounds more like he tried your approach and it didn't solve anything.
