As stated, that dark spot on the top of the cake looks troublesome to me but i've never done this before so I have no idea. It doesn't smell if that helps. Thanks!

Those are spores....you have obviously harvested from that cake already, and let your mushrooms go too long before picking them. That one in the bottom of your pic is overdue.. Pick your mushrooms when the veils are JUST starting to tear... this makes for max potency and also prevents spores from getting everywhere in your FC.

This is flush one, I am not sure.

I actually had not harvested from this cake yet in the picture. Right after taking it, I picked the overdue one shown as well as three on the backside that were due. I was told that I should pick once the veil falls and the cap flattens out. Should I just pick once the veil falls?
Also, why is it that some fruits grow so large so quickly and others are so small and slow?
Thank you for all of the responses!

Well, somehow you got spores on top of your cake...To answer your q's yes harvest as SOON as the veil begins to tear...don't even wait for it to drop fully. See the flush harvested on that rack in my sig? They look like popsicles almost? Those are perfect. And as for the multi-sized fruits and different fruiting speeds...that's all genetics. I assume you did a multi-spore inoculation?

Okay, thats good to know. There is so much info on here and its contradictory. I inoculated the top of the jar in four spots with .25

No...multi-spore inoculation means you used a spores instead of live culture. We call it multi-spore (MS) because when you use spores you are introducing countless different genetic codes, much like siblings have different genetic sequences, well so to sub-strains of mushrooms. When you use agar to isolate a good sub-strain what you are doing is isolating a single set of genetics, thus giving you a live culture with known fruiting properties. The fastest and easiest way to isolate a set of genetics is to clone a mushroom that has the traits you are looking for. So if someone asks you if you did a multi-spore inoculation or an MS inoculation....you know what to say now.
