Not Pretty, but Successful First Grow

So I succeeded in harvesting my first flush of cubes. I'm gonna try and give a run down all about my mushy cultivating experience.
I'll start from the top... I have never seen, smelled, tasted or let alone grew a mushroom before. I have a very good friend who has been dealing with cluster headaches for the past 6-7 years and they have steadily gotten worse. He was prescribed prednizone about a year ago. Since then his health has rapidly been decreasing. Cluster Headaches do not kill you, but i can assure you that the medication the doctors have him on are sending him to an early grave. In an attempt to find an alternative treatment, I read about the effects Psilocin has on Cluster patients. I told him about it, he researched it and decided to give it a shot. He asked me to attempt a grow for him so, here we are. The plethora of information here has been amazing. I just want to thank everyone for their individual contributions. On to the grow...
We decided to attempt an easy, budget grow for the first time, that way if the treatment is unsuccessful, he did not waste too much money. I obviously chose the PF Tek since it seems to be the go to for beginners.
I made my still air box and fruiting chamber out of Sterilite totes. I wish I would have read about the coffee can trick for the holes in the SAB.
I couldn't find BRF so I made my own in a blender out of store brand brown rice.
Here is the Verm brand I used for the substrate and the Perllite for the FC.
I nocced 5, Pint jars because the 1/2 pints aren't sold anywhere around here, with an Equador strain syringe from a sponsor. We don't have a PC so I used the steam method.
 4 days post-noc

 During colonization.
 After Birthing, Dunk and Roll.
 First Pin.

 During growth.

I had the FC up high on a shelf to keep it kind of out of sight. I believe that caused the mushies to grow out sideways and turn down.
 This was the largest one
This was the first harvest. I took the largest cap and used it to make a Spore Print.

 The Spore Print.
And this is the entire first flush drying in a make shift Desiccant Chamber. I put them in after 48 hrs of being under a fan and it seems to be doing a good job.
It is now time for the second flush. I dunked again for 24hrs but I did not roll this time. This time I modified the FC and placed a normal coil type light over it. It seems to have gotten the temp in the FC up and the pins that are growing now seem to be growing up so, i guess we will have to wait and see. Also, there was one cake that did not grow any before I dunked for the second time. It is the one in the middle of the second flush picture and it seems to be way ahead of the other cakes now. It took 7 weeks to colonize the jars and I believe it was not 100% when I birthed it.
If this treatment works, I believe I'm going to try a WBS monotub grow for the next batch with the B+ syringe we got from the same supplier.
Again, I want to thank everyone for the great info found on this site. I hope my ugly, but successful first grow can help someone else in the future.

Thanks, I hope it works as well.
I think I may have went a little overboard when inoculating them since I ended up using the entire syringe on those 5 jars. Other than that, all I did was set them in a closet and leave them alone. It started out strong, but ended up taking 7 weeks to get 100%. I now see why everyone says growing makes you patient.

It all looks good to me. I would use a thicker layer of perlite... most teks call for 4 inches.. also, the light being right on top of the FC can make the air dry in the chamber which is the oposite of what you want.

I haven't weighed them yet. He is supposed to be getting me a digital scale so I can weight them. When that happens, I will update with the numbers. Thanks for the reply.

I did notice that my perlite dried out pretty quick on the first flush so I have been having to mist it a few times a day. I will definitely do a thicker layer next time. I covered the hole I cut in the lid of the FC with saran wrap before I set the light fixture down on top of it in the hopes that will help keep some of the humidity in.

That's a great looking first grow, and a very noble reason for doing so (I suspect most people on here are growing for less noble reasons ) I recommend you let some of those mushies grow a bit longer before harvesting, i.e. wait for the veil to break, I see you did that for some of them. But let us know how your friend reacts to them, and if they help his headaches. Psychedelics really do have amazing healing powers, and it's unfortunate, really a shame, that the US and some other countries don't allocate much money for research.

Thanks. As for the stages I picked them, We are not sure whether to grow for weight or grow for potency so I tried to get some after the veil was broken and some right before. My guess is, since they are not being grown for commerce or recreational use, but for medication, the potency will be the way to go. If we can get a successful dosage with minimum weight that causes minimum adverse side effects such as upset stomach, we should be golden.

Ended up being about 21g dry from 4 cakes. Here is a link to a thread about the second flush which is currently in the works. I think it may turn out to be better than the first flush since all 5 cakes are producing this time. I'll be updating it when I finish this post.

great job! but shouldn't your SGFC be elevated for better air flow from below, in your pic it looks like is sitting directly on a flat surface
how many days did it take you from introducing to fruiting conditions to pining/fruit bodies?

My SGFC has become less SG and more FC, lol. The holes I drilled are too small to really move the air like they should. Next time I build one, ill try and do it right. I'm a full-time student so luckily I'm available to fan it for 30-45 seconds about 8-10X's a day to keep the fae up. If I recall correctly it was about 2-5 days after putting them in the FC that I saw my first pin. Thanks for the advice.
