Do my jars need oxygen?

I'm currently a week into the inoculation with my mason jars. I don't see any mycelium on any of the jars. I have a verm layer in the jar, two layers of tinfoil on top of the jars, and tape to hold down the tinfoil. I've been reading some people saying You don't need any covering on the jars?is this true?am i suffocating my spores?

Remove the foil. They need GE (gas exchange) while colonizing which the holes will provide. The verm layer will keep contaminants out.

You would probably still see growth but it can take longer than a week. Either way remove that foil.

thank u for the quick responses. 2 more questions. Should I even worry about putting foil on in the first place...for a few days until taking it off after inoculation?AND should I also take foil off my liquid culture? It's in a mason jar with two holes on the lid. Its been growing extremely slow:/

The tinfoil is there to stop moisture from getting into your jar and wetting your dry verm later during sterilizing. Once your jars have cooled you can remove the foil. Just make sure you have micropore tape over your inoculation holes as another barrier and also to prevent you making a mess during inoculation. The tape can be removed right after you inoculate for better gas exchange. I have no idea about lc

You just have open holes in the lid of your LC jar?
Toss the LC and start over with a filter on the holes.
And like everyone's saying, get rid of the foil. You only want the foil on there while pressure cooking.

If there's a lot of air at the top of the jar, you might get away with no gas exchange, I guess...
The only filters I use and recommend are 0.22 micron syringe filters or synthetic filter discs designed for mycological use.
Also, I feel like I should mention -- liquid culture is not generally recommended for beginners. It's contamination-prone and contaminants are often undetectable.

thanks for the filter suggestions toxetel u the bomb! So I took off the tinfoil 2 days ago and out of the 4 jars I have only my mexicans started showing mycelium. Is there any hope for the other ones after being in tinfoil for around 2 weeks, or is it safe to say I killed them?:x
