9/11 is tomorrow what do you remember about that day and why is it still so powerful?

Looking back it was one of the worst things that could have happened to this country and imo not because of the couple thousand people that died. Shit happens. But the government response to "Protect this country" is moving us into a police and surveillance state at the very least. Look at what the NSA is doing and homeland security. Obama and his NDAA and patriot act. The terrorists certainly won.
(This thread is bound to have a bit of conspiracy talk and should not be moved based on that alone. Stop being so fucking sensitive about it in the pub where other useless conversation is tolerated all day every day)

I think its hilarious that they managed to find the passport that belonged to one of the terrorists on the plane oh just in the street unscathed. Even though the planes blew up into a million pieces oh and upon blowing up with all that jet fuel that WAS SOOOOO HOT in managed to melt the beams in the buildings bringing them down to the ground.... But yeah a tiny passport made out of plastic and paper managed to survive the blast.....

ANywho...

Hundreds of thousands of tiny pieces of paper and plastic survived the blast.
I imagine the vast majority were looked at closely enough to tell when it was a passport. As they were trying to ID all the victims, a passport shaped object would have received plenty of scrutiny.

I didn't care much about it when it happened, and still don't really.. I mean it's sad so many people died, but I'm not going to get outraged about it like society says I should. Fucked up shit happens all the time, I don't get outraged by all of that either..
That said, I live pretty close to one of the largest refineries in the US (and is in the top 10 worldwide) and when it happened my wife (then fiancee) was freaking out about it, worried that we were living pretty close to what amounts to a giant bomb and a likely target of anyone looking to cripple the US. I was worried too, but wasn't really freaking out about it like she was.

I don't know, but I imagine lots of paper and plastic did.
There's not much mass to paper and plastic, so much would remain.
Go outside. Throw a glass at a wall. Now throw a piece of paper from the same distance. Then report back.

Brilliant logic. Paper and plastic IN THE PLANE did not survive the blast that brought down a fucking skyscraper.
Now paper from the building and surrounding floor around the impact spot was tossed about sure.

I woke up to Howard Stern as my alarm and him talking about it; and turned on the TV to see the towers burning before school.
It is still so powerful because there are many unanswered questions: http://www.wanttoknow.info/officialsquestion911commissionreport.shtml
-------------------- Favorite entheogen experiences in descending order: 1)Combo of oral DMT + smoked Bufotenine 2)Amanita (urine drank twice) 3)Mushrooms > Achuma 16"+cid(still need higher dose Achuma)> Cid (still need high dose) 4)Morning Glory-HBWR (+cumin, cinnamon aldehyde adducts) > Methyl chavicol (need more activators) 5)Salvia (need to try quid)
All readable matter in the above post is ficticious... any similarities to real life are purely coincidental. Blessing.

Anyway back to the question in the thread title -- it was a surreal couple of weeks after it went down. I was in class at the time. It was pretty early. My teacher's cell started blowing the fuck up and she went outside and took the call and didn't return for like 30 minutes. Then she came back in and told us that the entire school was dismissed due to the WTC towers getting attacked. The gravity of the situation didn't really hit me until I got to my car and started driving home -- and every single radio station across the dial was talking about what just happened. Every single one.
Then I got home and saw the video. It was unbelievable seeing it unfold live like that.
And the next two weeks were unlike any two weeks I've seen in my life. The news coverage was 24 hours a day for 2 full weeks. Every fucking channel. I would stay up til like 4 in the morn just getting high and watching the coverage. They halted everything, including the NFL. All games were canceled. You know it's huge when they're freaking canceling NFL games. And I'll never forget the moment where FINALLY when I turned on the TV (2 weeks later) there was some actual television on other than 9/11 coverage. It was a Seinfeld marathon.
I must have watched 10 episodes in a row. I was just so fucking happy to get my mind off the WTC.

9/11 didn't make me feel any more vulnerable than before. It's a waste of time spending your entire day worrying about the absolutely minuscule chance you're going to be blown up in a terrorist attack. The anthrax attacks were a different story - a combination of not knowing the true extent and the serious potential harm a bio attack poses compared to a few pansy-assed bombs or hijacked planes.

I remember getting out of school early, I imagine when the plane was brought down in PA they were just like "fuck this, send em home". My older brother was at the bus stop on his bike which was weird because he was in high school and usually got out after us. He told me the Pentagon got hit by an airplane, I remember asking what the Pentagon was. Part of me kind of wishes I was a little older so I could've understood all the shit that was going down but I was just happy to get out of school early.
Imagine how intense it was if you were just say in a convenience store or something watching a tiny TV with a crowd of strangers? That's how my Dad saw it. That would've been crazy.

ity was my first dfay of grade 7, i sorta overheard 2 teachers talking about outside the classroom, but didnt realize what they were talking about, it sorta sounded like they were talking about vandalism or something
than the next class the teacher opened with this is a very important day in history, i thought it was going to be some bullshit about being the first day in class, then she told us what happend
when i went home for lunch my mom was watching on the tv and i saw the replay of towers getting hit

AS to the thread question I hardly remember 9/11 I was in first grade when it happened and all I thought it was, was an airplane crash. had no idea why that seemed like such a big deal, I remember seeing it on the news before I left for school and wondering why the hell people where talking about it still when I got back. I also didn't know about the plane crashing into the pentagon until years later.

What's wrong with that? I thnk it's kinda creepy when people get crazy emotional about things that don't have any serious personal consequences to them. People in Iowa going bonkers over 911 aren't that much different than the people that went bonkers about Casey Anthony.

I live within the WDC no fly zone. A Cessna flying overhead means trouble. Still, people totally overestimate the risk of these things. The death toll on 9/11 was 3000? Sounds like a lot, but 6500 people die in the US every day.

Unless you are one of the dead, a friend or a family member, a 33% increase for a single day is a insignificant bump.

Not really. A blip on a single day. For the year, 911 caused a 0.1% increase in deaths. We drastically altered the way we do many things in this country over one tenth of one percent - even less if you amortize over years or decades.

I happened to be working on a court house roof in Queens. Pretty fucked up view we had, and smelling the smoke. RIP, 343, and the rest of 'em .
My job site, a Supreme Court, was shut down for the rest of the week, and security there went crazy after that. (potential target they thought)
One thing that scarred me was the constant sirens, 24/7 for weeks. And I was living in NJ then. Non stop, every night, all night. Also seeing that smoke plum visible from my house, (about 12 miles away) for 3 months. It was so hard to not look when I was out side or driving.
About 10 to 20% of the union trades working at the job site volunteered to work ground zero. Many knew people lost as there was construction going on in the towers.
I also remember the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. I had the day off and watched it unfold on TV. Fucked up my lunch time and my scheduled work in NYC.

I was a freshmen in high-school sitting in at the end of Spanish class when I heard it. It was a very surreal moment, I don't even remember much of that day. I actually didn't know what to think then, I was just reacting inline with pretty much everyone else. In shock and awe.
I have a German Life Magazine Issued from 2001 Aug-Sep. On the cover is Henry Kissinger, and on the first page of that magazine is an add for dab beer with a beautiful picture of the Twin Towers. This I will keep as a sort memorabilia. Make of it as you will but Kissinger was head of our 9/11 commissions who came out with the 9/11 report.

I was in high school.
I was in 11th grade when it happened. I happened to be taking a Current Issues class that year. I was actually in the class when it happened. I know this may sound awful, but when they told us and turned the TV on, I remember thinking "Great. That's all we're gonna talk about in this class the rest of the semester." And it was.
I hate that there were people that had to experience such a sense of terror and fear right before they died, being ripped from existence without being able to say goodbye to the people they loved. It seems like such a terrible way to go out. And for the families to live on knowing that fact. But past that, it doesn't affect me. I don't feel any hate or need for revenge. I probably wouldn't think about it this time of year, except people always bring it up.

While I think its awful what happened, we must look like a bunch of idiots from any non-American perspective. Seriously, we talk about it too much and call the victims heroes. They didn't WILLINGLY sacrifice themselves, they were murdered... as awful as it is, that does not make them heroes.

Too bad it survived.
I was at work. The crew was installing windows and I was in the truck putting the next bid together with Imus on the radio. Warner Wolf called in and reported that a plane had hit one of the towers. He thought it was a small plane at first but it obviously turned out that it was something else especially when the second plane screwed into the other tower. My initial reaction was.......al Qaeda. By the time I got to my boat they weren't letting anybody near.
My daughter's best friend's father was murdered that day.
I saw the smoke plume from my house for the better part of a week. My friend was a cop who was awarded the medal of valor for his acts that day.
I am going to be completely clear. This attack was perpetrated by Muslim extremists. Pieces of shit. I'm going to be even clearer about something else. Anybody who says otherwise is an ignorant, heinous tool of scumbags who doesn't know anything but stupidity. Too bad the Pentagon survived? Really? Would you submit your life to the Kremlin? Sharia? Me? You should suck the cock of everybody in the US military. Without them you would be a slave.

I remember seeing my parents cryin front of the TV, it was a pretty sad day even if I didn't fully understand what was going on back then.

Not really, I can understand how traumatizing it must've been, even if calling them heroes might be a bit too much yeah, I'm sure they'd choose being alive over being heroes.

There's actually people on this board that believe we'd be fine without a military and better off. And then we would run through fields of flowers all day with rainbows in the sky.

We spend more than every other civilized nation combined....we could cut a lot, save a lot, and still be more powerful than anybody else by a long shot.

Funny how so many people get annoyed when you point out that they are wrong.
So now it has come down to you talking about yourself in the 3rd person?

I actually think we're witnessing a reversal of the paranoia that has gripped this country for the past decade. The American public has never so strongly and vocally disapproved of a potential war as it has of striking Syria. I had hoped it would happen quickly after the death of Osama bin Laden, but I guess reversing twelve years of FUBAR policy doesn't happen overnight.
