checking spawn

Hey all.
So...I've recently been having problems with trich. Trying to locate the source.
A few tubs have started their first flush before they get infected. Others colonized and showed trich after being put into fruiting. This leads me to believe that my spawn is contaminated. But my spawn always smells good and I've even shaken the jars 2 days before using them and they've healed properly in those 2 days.
Or...maybe it could be my pasteurization? I pasteurize in a double oven bag. Maybe it's too big and dense.
I've been using lc's, but I'm going to switch to a brand new spore syringe, then g2g, then I'm going to pasteurize in jars instead of a big ass bag No real questions here, but your thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. Enjoy your day.

I'm with the pasteurization thing if your spawn is clean.
Trying jars could be a good idea. I think it's easier to control the temps of jars and it really doesn't take THAT much longer. I bought two stock pots from walmart (sorry RR) and they turn out two coir bricks worth of sub in a couple hours.

did you test your LC out on a pf cake to verify it's clean?
I use gallon ziplocks to pasteurize, works well so far.

Yea, I used to do pillow case, but found the oven bags in a pot of water to be much better. I think I pack too much sub in there sometimes though. Seems multiple jars with water around them all makes more sense than one big mass bag. I get so tired of doing dishes though. Oh well.
I'm really kind of thinking it's my spawn though, as my lc's are old and I have no way of telling if they are bad. Rarr
I did not test my lc on a cake. That's a great idea though. Thank you. Haven't done a pf cake since 2002. Time to dig out some old notes.

Rather than make a PFtek cake, you could just use the same 1/2 pint jars and fill it with WBS instead of BRF substrate. I use tall 1/2 pints with 1/4" SFD covered hole in the middle of the lid with RTV injection site(s) to test my LCs with WBS. It is imperative that the injection site(s) be RTVd for this method since you won't be using verm as a barrier. Once the WBS jar is done colonizing and it is verified clean, you can G2G that jar out and also proceed with your LC inoculations if you want.

Juiceh, What would that test show as opposed to using a larger jar? Should I not just g2g a large jar I have now? And if I do, then what? I'm confused. Thank you

I used to test my LC’s with BRF in a shot glass, tin foil held in place with an elastic band & micropore tape with holes poked through both the tape and the foil. Practically halves the colonisation time which is perfect for testing the viability of LC’s.
Good Luck!!

OK guys. Just loaded up 8 half gallon jars and am bringing up to temp to pasteurize. My question is, when the time is up, do you take the jars out of the pot, or let them cool in it? Do you pasteurize for 60 or 90 min? And how long does it take the jars to cool? Seems it would be considerably less time than a big bag.

Sixty minutes is fine, and take the jars out of the water after they're done. Quick cooling is necessary for proper pasteurization.

Honestly I dont use any LC's because they seem to suck imho. They sometimes look clean but then when you transfer that to agar or grain they turn colored.. Use agar, cleaner, smarter, and more efficient. Hell you could always drop a clean 100% good piece of agar into a LC and that would work way better than just shooting spores into water. Anyway sorry for ranting. I would like the others already pointed out, just shoot some in a brf jar or small 1 pint jar of wbs. GOOD LUCK HOMBRE

I shot up a little jar yesterday. I do have some verified spawn foe what I'm pasteurizing now. And I went back to coir from hpoo.
Any easy to understand links on agar? .I've never even looked into it. I know it makes more sense, but I am so busy, I just never took the time to understand it.
Thanks.

Oh man, there are tons of links on agar...
My favorite is Doc T's no pour agar as long as you aren't going to be getting big into isolates and just want clean cultures, otherwise Frank has some good info on agar here and here.
Lots more info can be found through the search function too. Just click the "trusted cultivator" box when searching.

Thanks for the links guys. Getting reading to read them now and take some notes.
Just pulled jars out of pots. I'm a fool for using a bug bag the past few years. The jar process was so fast!! And when I got to 150, I turned off the gas and out the pot lids on. Stayed at 150 for 70 min. I'm going to save a lot of fuel.
I guess I got bulk down so long ago, I just stayed with what I knew. Then the mushroom gods said, "here's some trich mofo. Time to learn more."

Jars were awesome. Spawned and washed already. I'm really thinking I became too confident and pasteurizing big bags of poo wasn't working.

Looking through old posts. Thought I'd update this. I started using half gallon jars to pastuerize, and have had zero contams since.
