Divorce

I am not married, but was once engaged.
My question is this:
When one party files for divorce does the other one have to consent (sign the papers) before the divorce can actually take place?
An older guy I know is going through divorce but his wife won't sign the papers and consequently he is unable to marry his new love.
Is this how it works?

No. A person can get a divorce without consent in every state. It often takes a lot longer, however. In fact, it can take 10 years in extreme cases.

What are the variables that may lead to an extreme 10 year case?

I am always thinking about my belongings when it comes to relationships. Maybe I am a paranoid bastard, but that is okay. Prenup.

If divorce is on your mind before you get married, you shouldn't be getting married at all.

It's a possibility.
Or maybe some other kind of union that is not so official.

You can be in a lifelong relationship without getting married. I don't believe in divorce under any circumstances, so I'll never be getting divorced by consent.

Doesn't marriage give you certain rights though? Like hospital visitation?
Personally I don't like keeping women around as more than FWB so I wouldn't know

That's how I feel too which is why I was asking about the conditions of divorce.

So if one partner beats the crap out of the other partner... no divorce?
No divorce for cheating? Lying? Stealing? Kiddie groping?
While I'm aware you didn't claim divorce should be banned, just that you wouldn't, you'd stay married under the circumstances I listed?
Just a blanket... I'll never divorce? Or were saying (in a round-about way) that you'll never marry?

I am married. I wouldn't get divorced in any of your stated scenarios. Certainly, if someone is a danger to me, I might very well live elsewhere until I've rectified that situation, but I wouldn't get divorced.
To me, the phrase "for better or worse" is crystal clear. It doesn't mean anything if one interprets it as "unless it gets really bad."
Today, people get divorced for stupid reasons like, "I don't love her anymore" or "I found someone else."

Thats inspiring, but even the good book permits divorce under grounds of adultery. I recently heard of a divorce that cost the couple 400k. 400 fucking thousand dollars because the chick wanted everything.
"Just give me full custody, the house, and more child support and ill end this".
Fucking sickening that people let their emotions get to that level. Ill say it again, 400 fucking thousand dollars. fucking sick

I don't find the "good book" to be particularly good or instructive on how someone should live their life. If you don't mean something, you shouldn't say it.
