mushrooms and human bacteria - colonization
    #18822320 - 09/10/13 07:48 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

This is a bit of a weird question I don't think I saw the answer to on here, lets say youre colonizing myc which is only say, 30% done at the moment for most of them, but you just got sick, and you have a fever. Now, if you were to interact with your jars at all (just looking at them individually once a day or so, very carefully), could they catch your cold? I know its a strange question but I really do wonder. If you have a 100 degree fever, can it be dangerous for your Myc to touch them? Lets say you wash your hands almost every time you even touch the glass at all .

I see that they could get trich/mold, but what about human germs/virii?

'Interacting' with the jars all the time will get them contaminated. Not your cold.

This is just a precaution. Anyway, that doesn't really answer my question, and I mostly just look at them through the plastic, and there's nothing wrong wi that. But that doesn't answer my question: is mycelium susceptible to human disease? Also I don't need basic contam advice, I know the deal with that. What I'm wondering is simply can human bacteria invade the mycelium?

Thanks, though, I figured out what to do/not do after my first time, which had zero problems. The only thing was after 4 flushes they got covered with cobweb-mold (I think that's what it was) and I had to leave em out in nature (they're alive, I wouldn't just dispose of them). I have heard of people going for 6+ flushes using the same spores, so I think my real issue was that I didn't give enough FAE towards the end, but I got everything I wanted to from it, I guess I know now to fan more during fruiting. Anyways that time gave me 90g from 8 jars, and I'm trying to do even better this time.

,y only worry was that I could get my colonies sick because germs from me are in the air, hence why I was wondering if cubes are susceptible

No it won't.

Your jars should have a filter of some sort. Dry verm counts. They'll be fine.

I was thinking that first reply was a bit weird, like no one takes a second to look at their jars and see what's going on in them? And yeah of course, I have a nice layer of dry verm and even foil on some of them (for labeling which is which, not because I think the foil will actually matter).

But yeah, turning your jars upside down and constantly playing with them is not the best idea, I agree. That will fuck things up. Anyway, thanks for a nice reply, too much condescending on this site

Most colds are viruses which target specific species.
So no.

However your body is just swarming with all sorts of bacteria and fungi (bacteria outnumber your cells 10-1) many of these happily live on you with no problem but would love to get inside your jars and eat all that fresh sterilized food.  Washing your hands everytime you touch your project is a good idea cold or no cold.

Remove the foil. It'll stall your cakes.

No, it really won't hurt anything. You shouldn't be turning them upside down or shaking them, but you can touch/look at them all you want.

I always heard that if you move them around too much the dry verm layer will move and shift, thereby letting contams work there way down to the substrate.

You just have to be careful with them.

I think it to be a bad practice to turn the jars upside down.  Be patient.

It certainly is.

But if the PF cakes are stalling out, what else can you do?

You 100% lose them or you try something that's got a 50/50 shot like flipping them.
