Mushroom hunting in Iceland
    #18811827 - 09/07/13 02:39 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I went mushroom hunting for the first time today. I live in Iceland and Liberty Caps (Psilocybe semilanceata) are supposedly very common here. I have been studying pictures of lib caps for the past days to make sure I knew what I was looking for once I went hunting. I tried my luck today and I found a good amount of mushrooms. I'm pretty sure I found some lib caps along with some other species. I was hoping to get some help with identifying them. I found these all on a grassy field, there was some dog poop around there. They all smell like mushrooms, but I only have experience with magic truffles so I don't know too much about magic mushrooms.

The pictures say more than words so here we go;

#1

#2

#3

#4

I plan on making spore prints to grow my own shrooms later but I'm only interested in the ones that contain psilocybin.
Can you tell if any of these are non magic without the spore print color? If not, I will provide the spore prints once they are done.

Thanks, good to know

Are #1 and #4 the same species then? #4 are much bigger and darker than #1.

#4 is a Panaeolus sp., not active.

#1 are liberty caps. the others are not...Only the #1 photos are libertys

for one thing you'll notice the #1 mushrooms are tougher to feel and the others fall apart easier if you squeeze them. liberty caps are more rubber like compared to the others

The last pic in #4 also shows liberty caps.

The first pic in #4 is Panaeolus, probably Panaeolus acuminatus.

yeah I saw those on the left in the left photo #4 and upper right

but I figured he'd have an easier time with sticking to #1 as being more obvious
if he's thinking #1 and #4 are different that might not be good

the color isn't quite there in #4 but it's probably digital flash

#1 is the easiest but those are more in the hygrophanous stage and easier to tell

Basically liberty caps will turn lighter/white after a few hours in the sun (hygrophanous) That';s the ones in #1

while they are darker and still wet you can usually peel off a pellicle, like a clear skin off the cap

liberty caps will also have a different smell than the others, usually stronger than the others

we can certainly say that #2 and #3 are definitely not liberty caps

BTW, iceland is supposed to be the mother ship for liberty caps

Thanks for all of the responses.
I have kept the mushrooms (#1 and #4) in a paper bag in the fridge for the last couple of days and I think I've managed to sort them out.

The lib caps have kept their colour but the #4 mushrooms have gone even darker.
Will it affect me or my trip in a bad way if I eat some of the panaeolus mushrooms?
