Got overwhelmed, got lazy, got tired... back on the horse.
    #18821883 - 09/10/13 02:55 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Two and a half months ago I inoculated my first jars.  Every week since that day UNTIL the 1st of this month I've continued to inoculate anywhere from 5 - 15 jars and have now fruited over 60 PF jars. Sometime, about three weeks ago I started getting tired.  My girlfriend left me.  I started slipping up.

I would come home on my lunch break and neglect to fan and mist my fruiting chamber.  I love inoculation.  The sterile procedure involved.  I love watching my jars colonize. I love harvesting my mushrooms.

I fucking hate maintaining multiple SGFCs.

I saw a bacterial contamination growing on the perlite in one of them a week ago.  I knew it was time to change out the perlite but I just didn't want to do it.  I didn't want to take the time to do it.  I just let it go and waited, nothing spread to the cakes but the contamination visibly spread over the perlite.

The town I live in largely depends on tourist business for income so the last three weeks have been hectic leading up to and following labor day weekend.  There was even two days in a row I didn't bother to fan or mist because I was so fucking tired after 12 hour shifts...  The overtime cash is nice but I feel like a shell who's only purpose is to work and fill the role that the customers want me to play...

'Can you cut this for me?'  'Do you have any of these in the back?'  'If I get this will you give me this other thing for free?'

'No sir but I will smile while I give you a courtesy choking!'

When I get home the last thing on my mind is wanting to fan and mist my shrooms.

Yesterday I noticed all the cakes in my SGFC had stopped pinning for the most part and I threw them into a pot to soak overnight.

I got home tonight and I went a little crazy... Looked at the beer bottles scattered around (have been drinking waaaaay to much to compensate for the work)

Cleaned up my place.  I threw away all the old perlite in my FC's. Took the time to scrub them out with soap and water and soak more perlite for them.

The humidifier I've been using has been sitting dormant in the grow room for 10 days.  Just sitting there growing bacteria.  I scrubbed it out an sanitized it.  Soaked the filter...

Ran in to a snag with the humidifier.  Whenever I put the reservoir on top of the unit it would non-stop feed water into the filter-area and overflow.  It took fifteen minutes of fucking with it to get it to work properly and just when I think it's working I notice the filter isn't staying upright in it's cradle and I have to jury-rig a rubber band thingy to hold it in place.

When I took the cakes out of the soak I noticed some of the pins on them had aborted.

I stopped keeping track weeks ago of which cakes were which.  I had a vague idea of which were mazatapec's because all of them were short little guys but still.  I ended up scraping off all the aborts and all the tiny ass pins to start from scratch.  I know a lot of people hold on to those but I really don't care for them. I have no need to hold on to aborts and tiny mushrooms.  Just not worth it to me.

On top of that I have five cakes that are over-due for birthing and starting to pin invitro and another 7 cakes that have reached seven days of consolidation (no pins though) and I'm out of space in my FC's and need to get a fucking nother one or pick some cakes to throw away... anyway...

So finally I've got my SGFC's with new perlite.  Got my cakes, some are on their second flush.  Some on their third. Some on their fourth.  Like I said, I stopped keeping track of which was which.  Humidifier is up and running again.

Have you ever fallen behind in your maintenance?  Did you ever get lazy about taking care of your shrooms?  Did you ever feel like the shrooms were working you more than you were working them?

This is a hobby for me most of the time but lately it's been feeling like a part time job that I can call in sick to any day I want because I'm the boss and I'm not going to fire myself...  Anyway.  Things have settled down at work and I managed to pull myself together tonight and get caught up on all the shit that needed to get done.

I just have to pay more attention to myself and notice when I'm starting to lose motivation and interest in maintaining what I started...  Don't know what kind of replies I was expecting from this but it felt good to write...  I can't wait till my grain jars are done colonizing and I can move on to my monotub.

Fanning and misting? Not really cause it takes like 60 seconds, and letting things slide will guarantee only a much bigger mess in the end! Harvesting is a bit of a pain though!

Its probably just a side effect of you letting yourself go since you've been feeling depressed! Growing can be a lot of boring work, cleaning, cooking, tidying, and general maintenance!

Unless yr running a commercial enterprise via shrooms what's the point or working yrself into the ground doing something unenjoyable?

Slow down, focus on a smaller and less stressful grow project and rediscover the love

After reading your whole post, this is meant for you right now.  I have my episodes myself.  Having a mono-tub allows me the freedom to loose my mind for days at a time and I don't have to think about it one bit.  Good luck, and not just with the fungus.  Tomorrow can be better.

Damn dude this is supposed to be a fun hobby. You are turning into something it was not meant to be. I will admit I was not that crazy about growing cakes in a sgfc. It was too much trouble but growing bulk in monotubs and playing around with culture on agar is a blast!
