In DC, most people work for the gov't and their salary is public, so long as you know their grade/step

Aside from asking friends how much they make I find it in pretty poor taste. I really dislike talking about what money I have or make with pretty much everyone as it's not really their business. It's not their business to know how I choose to spend in relation to how much I make. I have a couple friends who won't even talk about it and skirt the question if it comes up, although I don't think it really has since we all know they're not the type to talk about it. They were the first in my group of friends from college to get real jobs and make like 10s of thousands a year, the rest of us are still fuckups, so I guess we don't have an issue asking each other about our minimum wage jobs. Maybe if we made real money we wouldn't talk about it either

E: I guess it's also something that you should be able to talk to your family about once you're mature enough to handle it and have it not just be used as shit slinging amongst your peers.

I don't think it's taboo, it's just general manners.

Personally I could care less.  I'll tell anyone who asks.  I wouldn't ask a stranger but I've talked about it with friends out of curiosity because why not.  It also lets me know if I'm being compensated fairly or if I should look for a new position

I think one reason it makes me uncomfortable is because I'm one of those people that never really had to pay for shit. I've had jobs and paid for my own shit, but for most of my life I had jobs to pay for luxuries and my dad to pay for necessities. Even into college. I know people will judge me that I get money from daddy if I need it so I prefer not to talk about it. Aside from my close friends people don't know and they don't need to know. Most of the people I am friends with are not like that, and I also don't live like I have that luxury (for the most part). I mean it's not like I'm loaded, but if I couldn't make rent he would cover, or when I totaled my car he bought me a new one (nothing crazy, like a $3,000 car, but if I was on my own I just wouldn't own a car anymore). Shit like that. I can see the merit in knowing what people make, but I can also see the downsides.

I'm like the exact opposite. My parents didn't really help me with anything at all and I left the house and was living on my own at 16, I had to make my own way and do everything by myself. Even when I was homeless, starving and really needed help my parents wouldn't/couldn't. School of hard knocks or whatever you want to call it. Coming out the other side of it, and being successful in a career and life is the best "in your face" ever.
Shroomery was more of a family to me than my blood family ever was. And I mean that 110%.

That said I don't feel it's anyone's business to know my salary. I'd tell my best friend if he asked, but he doesn't. My friends generally don't care about that.
Unless I was like comparing and contrasting with someone who did similar work as me.. like as mentioned to see if I'm getting ripped off or not. But I already know I kind of am, so it gives me fuel to do better because I know I'm worth it.

I think it's no one's business.  That's the general sentiment around this part of western Canada

It seems every job I've had frowned officially upon discussing salaries with coworkers. It was also one of the first rules broken.

What's worse then asking someone what they make?

True fact:  I make $100,000 a year and only work a total of 4 months collectively.  NAH NAH NA BOO BOO!

lol no.  My work schedule is 6 months out of a 12 month year right off the bat because of the nature of my 12 hours shifts and shift work.

I work:

Monday, Tuesday - Days
Wednesday, Thursday - OFF
Fri, Sat, Sun - Nights
Monday, Tuesday - OFF
Wednesday, Thursday - Days
Fri, Sat, Sun - OFF
Monday, Tuesday - Nights
Wednesday, Thursday - OFF
Fri, Sat, Sun - Days
Monday, Tuesday - OFF
Wednesday, Thursday - Nights
Fri, Sat, Sun - OFF

repeat...

All shifts are 5-5, whether nights or days.

So 6 months right off the bat.  Then, as you can see from my schedule, everytime I put in 2 days off...I get a full week paid.  And this job has TONS of paid time off.  Floaters, banked over time, holidays, supplemental floaters, banked shiff diff, stat in lieu's, etc.

After putting in all holidays, at my discretion, I end up working only about 4 months out of the year.  In 5 years, it'll be more like 3 months.

it's definitely gauche to discuss how much you or someone else makes. people who haven't been raised with much class tend to harp on it. with school it's a little less that way because you may be talking to someone about your future plans, but generally income isn't something that's part of public life.

the question was  "is it taboo to ask how much someone makes"

Which is why i said, I think it is. But then I asked, what's worse?

And in my opinion, bragging about it was much worse.  I was trying to be an example of that, hence the :douchewink:

  I think talking/bragging about how much you make is WAY more tacky then asking someone how much they make
