Panaelous Subbalteatus?
    #18820532 - 09/09/13 08:08 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Habitat:
Found on lawn outside building with about five other same mushrooms grouped together. Had some good rain last week and has been in the mid 90's all week.
Gills:
Tan to light brown.

Stem:
about 6 cm long, same color as gills, about 2-3mm in diameter.

Cap:
about 2-3 cm in diameter, slightly umbonate, light tan with darker margins.

Spore print color:
Didn't print but took a pic of spores under scope.

Bruising:
The stem appeared darker after the trip home but didn't seem like bruising

How did you look at the spores without making a print?

Dunno what OP did but you can just pull of a piece of gill with tweezers and spread the spores in a drop of water to make a wet mount.

Makes sense. A spore print is very helpful in determining the whole Panaeolus/Panaeolina thing.

Yeah i started a print and it was pretty faint. I would have to say that the spores are definitely not jet black. Some of them are pretty dark but not all black.

They are most likely Panaeolina foenisecii.
Most/all Panaeolus have sharpie-black prints.

Alright so I made a new slide of spores from the spore print and they actually look more similar to pictures of P. subbalteatus or cinctulus spores. They are very dark, smooth, and elliptical.

P. foenisecii spores are supposed to be ligher in color with a slightly rough exterior. Is there a trusted identifier that could verify that?

These are the spores of what I am trying to ID

I think they looks smooth enough to be Panaeolus spores, however its hard to get much useful information from them at that magnification/resolution.  That doesn't narrow it down to P. cinctulus though...
