What to use to cut holes in a glove box???
#18820022 - 09/09/13 06:28 PM (10 years, 4 months ago) |

I'm trying to build a glove box to help solve some contamination issues I had.
What do you use to cut holes? I have cracked two containers so far by using a saw saw and a knife. Does anyone have a suggestion?
Do you need a glove box? Is it wise or is there a alternative that is just as good?
What do you use to cover the holes in the glove box when your arms are not inside?

Use a 4 - 4.5" soup can. Make sure to use a 4.5" can if you plan on using a 4" PVC adapter...
Heat it up on a burner and then with oven mitts ....very carefully.... use it to melt 2 perfect holes.

A hole saw or a dremel. Some people heat up coffee cans or something similar and melt holes, but fumes from burning plastic aren't good to inhale so I don't recommend that method personally.

Well of course the area should be well ventilated...
And the fumes from melted plastic are no more dangerous than the pollution we put in our bodies on a daily basis.
As long as your not deliberately huffing the fumes, it should be all good.

i used a drill with a 5 inch wide bit used for drilling large holes. i know someone in construction so it was no problem to find.
i do however caution, when drilling sterilite it cracks easily; like you said before. I managed to do an entire monotub with six 2-inch holes without cracking it at all. Use a crappy one to practice on first. You'll quickly pick up how much force, speed, etc you need.
If your glove box cracks once, big deal. Tape it up with a few layers of 3M tape. I have a strip going all the way up the side of mine..it happens. doesn't take away from its use though.
good luck and definitely make a glove box. i've only been at it for a couple months and I haven't seen more than two contams yet.

I traced a 4 inch soup can and then cut it out with a heated steak knife. I used a propane torch to heat the knife. I did it outside because of the smoke from the plastic

Man, if only I could show you all my first SGFC. Heated up a large screwdriver on a gas stove, and pushed through an extremely thick plastic tote on all six sides, indoors with only a range fan pulling fumes out. A couple holes with a large can isn't going to release that much bad stuff.

I bet it was ugly. When I made my sgfc I had to go out and get a brand new 1/4" drill bit. The ones I had were slightly dull and wanted to crack the plastic really bad

Heat the plastic with a standard lighter, cut with a thin knife. Cracking happens because the plastic is too cold, not the knife.
To make small holes, buy a standard glue gun, press into plastic. No fumes. Hot glue can also be used to repair cracks.

Besides the fact that on the inside and outside there were little pieces of plastic that melted and cooled around the holes I thought it looked fucking awesome.
Just kidding, it was ugly as shit, but functionally it was great.

I cover the arm holes with a piece of cling wrap when not in use, but I don't attach gloves or sleeves to my SAB.
I cut the holes with a 5" hole-saw on my cordless drill. If you lay the tote down on a piece of wood while you drill and go slow, you can prevent cracking.

The way I did it was trace out the hole, and perforate the line with 1/8" drill bit, then cut through it with the drill bit.

A hair dryer to warm the plastic before using the hole saw works to prevent cracking.

Also, run the drill slow and do not apply much force. I have had no issue taking my time and running my drill slow with a 4.5" bit. I have cracked tubs while trying to drill 1/4" hole, but not yet with any of my hole saw bits. Let the bit do the work, and don't force it. The bit will get hot, but take your time and don't force the bit through. A sharp bit is better than a dull bit in every way.

I used a soldering iron to perforate a circle out by poking a bunch of small holes then connecting the dots. Almost dismembered myself with a box knife before that so yeah.

A coffee can, oven mitts, and flame from a gas stove. Just melts the holes. Don't breathe the fumes. You can do it inside without an issue. Just make contact with one edge of the hot open mouth of the can then set it down against the surface and twist back and forth until you are done. Then knock out the plastic with a butterknife, screwdriver or otherwise long piece of metal.

Thanks for the help. I got a 4 inch can of tomatoes (were having spaghetti tonight as a result). Built a little fire in my pit. Threw in the empty can for 5 minutes once it was going. Took it out and bang. Two PERFECT holes in 30 seconds.

Oow tin snips are an interesting idea. A blowdryer is smart too, I bet the fan from a dehydrator could be used as well. Just to repeat, the main reason for cracking is shear forces on cold PP. Warm your PP before use and most methods will work. A nice sunny day will do it (I have a theory people who have more cracking issues live in colder climates).

What a friend did with his was drill bunch of holes in a circle.. Then go with a razor knife around.. Turned out not bad at all. Just be careful not to slip with the blade and cut a gash in the plastic.. or worse.. your wrist or some shit. That's if you had to do it like that lol.

I use a hole saw, don't put pressure on it, let the drill do the work.
This will prevent 95% of cracks.
Cracks that do occur get taped up. No one said it had to be pretty, just effective

I highly advise against cutting holes with a razor. One slip, and you are going to poke yourself. A sharp razor will go till it hits something hard.

Its not about who beat who (I win), but that It is really the best advice for this and any other project involving a drill. Bits look a certain way for a reason. Forcing ANY bit through anything is a recipe for disaster. The drill does the work by turning, not pushing.
I regularly use drills at work. I use large scale however. Its nothing for me to run a 12" bit through 10" or more of reinforced concrete. If You force one of them, it overdraws amps and flips breakers OR gets the bit stuck. There is nothing worse than having to cut apart a $1200 bit from a wall if it gets stuck....and once the teeth get busted off in your hole, you are fucked. A hardened steel bit will not cut through a hardened steel bit. The moral of the story: Take your time, its not a race. The outcome is better that way.

I used toilet flanges and a rubbermaid tub, trace outer edge of flange in the position you want on the lid of your tub. I just used a box cutter over the trace marks, easy enough, my friend used a soldering iron which I wouldnt recommend. Slide flanges into the holes in the lid of your tub and screw into place to secure flanges, gorilla tape heavy duty rubber gloves onto the tubing of the flanges that penetrate the lid, presto... glove box.

My HD is probably the same. The fittings I have were from work. I work in petroleum, so 6", 8" or even 12" fittings are readily available to me. I'm sure you could find some online, but since it's more of an aesthetic thing most wouldn't bother.
