Picking Shrooms
    #1881962 - 09/04/03 07:10 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Someone I know has a rather large GT casing fruiting right now. It is a 24 gallon bin. The entire bottom is covered with colonized straw and is cased with verm/coco coir. There are probably about 150 little mushrooms growing on it now, all of varying sizes and stages of maturity. There is absolutely no hope of all of them maturing at the same time, so what he was wondering is should he just pick them when they become mature enough and patch the spots with sterile casing mix. If he tried to pick them all at once he would be destroying tons of smaller, immature mushrooms. He has not been able to find a good answer to his problems.

I would try to pick them as they mature but if it can't be done with out hurting the immature mushrooms then he may have to pick them al at once. But try picking them as they mature for sure frist this will insure you get the most weight for your troubles

good luck

Pick them before they drop spores. It isn't the best thing for the mycelular network, but it's better than having rotten shrooms.

Definitely pick them before they drop spores. That is a contamination risk, and I have heard pins will not form where spores have dropped on the casing. I do not know if this is true or not (It seems like I had a casing I neglected that got spores all over it, and pins still formed. Perhaps they just found a spot with no spores, but it was quite covered with the purple). Better safe than sorry. Try to pick all the ones that are mature without hurting the others. Sometimes they can be separated, even when grown together. You must work carefully to not damage the others. But, when you have large clusters its inevitable that you pick immature ones also.

There are a few big ones with small ones attached to them, but there are so many more small shrooms it is worth the sacrafice.  :mushroom2:
