noobie's 1st grow

Hey there!
So I decided to give growing a shot and figured I might as well try to record it (or at least half ass the recording of the progress). I sort of started it up as a challenge to myself to see how inexpensive I could do it for and I've loosely followed a mixture of a couple different teks after reading for a couple weeks.
So far, I've learned what I should be doing and a couple things to avoid in the future, but I'm surprisingly pleased with the feeling of being able to grow pretty much anything as I've not so much as planted a flower or mowed a lawn in about 8 years.
This was taken 3 days after inocculation. I stored all 12 jars in a closed cardboard box on the top of some electronic equipment and it stayed about 84F the whole time.

10 days after inocculation. Trying not to peak too often:

21 days after inoculation. 3 days after full colonization. I jumped the gun a little bit, but thats just something I learned to hold off for a couple more days in the future:

After dunking the cakes for 24 hours and rolling them a bit, I built a terrarium made from a smaller clear plastic bin and put a couple of inches of perlite on the bottom. I didn't keep the verm very organized when I dunked and rolled my cakes, so its a bit sloppy. Also, the perlite was not strained as well as it should have been. Again, it isn't hurting me so far, but it is something to remember for the future. I made several small holes along the bottom of the container just above the perlite line and then added a hinged door to the top with duct tape and a box cutter for easy access. Lighting in the room is optimal and after adding a thermometer/hygrometer, I just left it be while checking the conditions every few hours. This is the first sign of pinning the morning of the 5th day after putting them in the terrarium.

a day and a half later: image link image link
Picked off about 24g and got them ready to dry about 3 days after they showed up. I could have been a bit more patient, but it was exciting what can I say. image link
overall, this has been an unexpectedly fun learning process and its very rewarding to me...not just for the trip itself but for watching something of your own creation come to be something you've previously had a hard time coming across.
I may post some updates as this continues since it is only in the first stages of the first flush so far. Any constructive criticism or advice is more than helpful since without this place, I'd have no idea what I was doing and would have never been able to get this far <3

yes they are off to a bit of a slower start but they have all have started to pin and one has actually got a few that are almost ready to be harvested.
I've got another 9 cakes that are ready and I think I'll place them in the same type of container but a much wider lower shape. That way, the surface area of the perlite is on my side and there isn't so much altitude in the terrarium to allow for humidity change from bottom to top. Considering cutting those cakes in half so they are 1/2 as tall and setting them up 6x3 in the new container since it is gigantic, but I might wait to get a better opinion on doing that before I take a knife to those tall cakes.

The taller cakes seem to be troublesome with a perlite bed because the humidity stays correct at the low parts and too dry at the higher parts of the containers. I did my next 6 cakes like this and this is 5 days after birthing them. With ~120 pins and ~20 mushrooms on their way to maturity already, I'd say they seem to be doing much better than my first shot last week:

How can this be when humidity and heat both rise, and the cakes/perlite are giving off nothing but heat and humidity?
Let me assure you your chamber does not defy the laws of physics.

I see no holes in your chamber....did you build the SGFC to spec, with 1/4" holes every 2" on all 6 sides?
Perlite in the bottom of a tub with no holes is kinda pointless.

I have holes along the lid and bottom. The sides only have a row of holes right above the perlite layer. I tried a container last week that was more to the SGFC spec and the humidity stayed way under what it was supposed to be. I'd like to make something a bit more fitting size wise, but without a car and living in the city, I've got limited means to bring back larger bins to the house, so I've been using what I already have on hand.
This seems to be doing good enough for what I was hoping to end up with, though depending on how the conditions inside end up progressing, I might add more holes in the sides if it helps keep things where they need to be. I suppose I can always add tape if it ends up doing any harm

If the SGFC was built to spec, the humidity would be perfect and you can ditch the useless cheap unreliable made in china hygrometer that is just fucking with your head to begin with.
Your cakes and fruits are starving for fresh air....help them breathe man!
1/4" holes every 2" in a grid pattern, on all 6 sides, filled with 4-5" of moist perlite, in a room with no running fans, raise so that air can pass up under it, and up thru the holes in the bottom.
Do that and you will be golden.....

Thanks, I'll give something closer to that a shot next time I can get out to a hardware store. I think the running fans in the room is what caused me grief with my first attempt before this one. I'll see if I can do something about that.
Also, I don't rely too heavily on the hygrometer in that pic, its more of a thermometer than anything. Everyone on IRC already made it pretty clear to me that hygrometers suck.
At any rate, I've got 12 more 4oz jar cakes that will be ready in 2-3 weeks. I'll update this thread with something built to the spec you outlined, thanks again for clarifying the bit about no fans....this is probably what had thrown me off prior
