Is it taboo to ask how much someone makes per year where you come from?
    #18819334 - 09/09/13 03:32 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

For some reason, it always has been where I'm from. You can't ask someone their salary, net worth, how much they made on a business deal etc. I always found that to be exectionally stupid.

The only place acceptable to talk about it is the bank with a financial adviser.

I was raised in a business family. By the time I was 8, I knew how much my mom and dad were making from their business. By the time I was 10 I knew how much they had in bank. At 12 I knew about their retirement funds, by 15 I knew all their investments and finally, lets say 20, I knew about everything. Taxes, mutual funds how much they owed to the bank, how to buy property, how to negociate deals and exchange investment ideas.

Every parent on earth should teach their kids that shit. That way when they turn 18 they know how to make money. Most people never tell their kids how much they make by fear that the kid would talk about it in school and that another parent would learn about it. Absolute stupidity. These kids won't even know how a fucking credit card work. How are they suppose to know how to increase their wealth???

All they have is a bank advisor that doesn't know shit about business cause he's an employee and the only product he knows about are what the bank promotes... Mutual funds. Worse investment to give to people who are clueless given by someone who is equally clueless. Ask a bank adviser how a stock price is calculated. They won't know shit... Then they'll be apologetic when you lose half your retirement when the market crashes...

If everybody openly talked about money, everybody would learn tricks to make themselves richer and I'm pretty fucking sure people would be richer than they are now.

Did your parents talk to you about money when you were a kid?

Did you know how much they made a year?

Is it taboo to talk about money in your part  of the world?
Did your parents talk to you about money when you were a kid?
You may choose only one
Did you know how much your parents were making per year?
You may choose only one
Is it taboo to talk about money in your part of the world?
You may choose only one

My parents grew up in a traditional mid-western environment.  It was considered rude to inquire about someone's salary.  I'd say this holds true for the vast majority of people I know.  I'm not really sure how this started.  I speculate that by asking someone how much they make, you're essentially asking them:  "How valuable are you to society?".

Myself, I could give a shit, but that's probably because I have a respectable job/career.

...most subjects find the experience valuable, some find it frightening, and many say that is it uniquely lovely.

My parents answer to that question was always "enough".

As a matter of fact, he once co-signed for a motorcycle I bought when I was 18 or so. When he filled out the application he wrote "enough" in the income line. The banker looked at him rather funny. Then the banker looked at my dad's credit report.

I got the loan.

I'm honestly not sure how taboo it really is in my area, I mean, I do have plenty of friends that really don't mind asking people but they're also pretty much just kids and more than likely have no regard for being polite.

I do agree that parents should involve their kids more when it comes to money and how they handle it. It could really teach them how to handle their money better and just what to expect when they grow up and actually have money they have to manage. My parents did talk to me a bit about money, but not nearly as much as I'd have liked them to.

A lot of it was pretty basic "Save your money so your not broke"... Well, that simply will not leave an impact on your life and isn't going to teach you shit. The more your involved the more "real" it is.  My parents would more or less bitch that schools should be teaching kids how to manage money. I do agree school should focus on money management more but the parents are the ones that really should be teaching them.

I know if I have kids, money is going to be something I'll be very focused on teaching them so they don't make the same mistakes I have.

I have to start paying student loans pretty quick here, and although I'm not looking forward to it I'm pretty excited to build my credit.

I can tell now when I was a young kid we were pretty poor, but I guess my parents got a much better job and things improved. I've asked how much they make and never got any real answers, I don't care anymore though. I still have to work for my my shit though (unlike some people I know whose parents still pay for their insurance and phone bill and shit..).

I don't care if people know what I make, probably because I'm in school/pretty young so I shouldn't be making much anyways. Even so, I wouldn't care if people knew how much I made unless I made a very good amount. I ask my friends how much they make, hell even coworkers who I'm friends with I'll ask  If I know them well I have no problem asking or telling how much we make and I don't think they mind because they tell/ask the same.

Enough to be comfortable, lol.  Truth be told, about 110k. In a high cost of living area.

Yeah it's definitely different with people your closer to, I don't have a problem asking. It's pretty rare that I do though because honestly I don't care that much and I usually try to stay out of people's personal business as much as I can.

My parents did kind of hide the amount of money they had from me, my mom would even hide money from my father. When I  got a bit older my parents would tell me we were broke or money was tight. Mainly just to give me a reason that they aren't gonna be able to help me out much financially.

Today my mother and I were talking about her selling one of her cars because she's getting tight on money. And she told me how much money she makes a year for the first time.

I don't really care how much money another person makes. Either they're awesome and worth knowing, or they're not. Knowing how much money someone else makes always turns into a penis measuring contest.

That's my wife's parents to a T. At every family function they spend virtually the entire time bragging about their rental house in Florida, trying to get people to look at the website for it (again,) etc. I would say that most people of their generation would consider it fairly rude to ask about a person's salary though, including my parents.

It depends on what you do. Work at a car dealership and everyone you work with will tell you what they make. That's probably true for any sales jobs actually. Outside of that, it seems rude to ask someone and I do not make a habit of telling people what I make, lest they feel like I should be the only one buying drinks.

I was pretty much in your same boat then my dad started making bookuuu bucks and I was the one doing the paper work and going to the bank at 16 plus picking up the envelopes with 10 to 50 k in them every 2 months. Cool job for a 16 year old just to have that much cash in your hand.
