Just got another job interview! 2

Hells yes. I've been trying to find a job in my field (biology) for over a year. Two weeks ago I interviewed at a neuroscience lab that does studies on infants and children. They emailed me the day after the interview to set up a second interview; that happens next week.
Today I just got a voicemail from a lab that does microbiology research on genetics in parasitic protozoa. I'd probably choose this one if I were to get both jobs, it's more my style and fits the research work that I have done in the past.
Fuck yes, I think my luck with job hunting might be changing soon. And I'll finally get to do something with my degree.

Congrats man! I updates my resume last night and hope to get something that goes with my degree too, but I think that will be hard in this part of the world. I just need to make more money so I can save to move from here. Good luck to ya

Trypanosoma cruzi and Trypanosoma brucei, they are responsible for sleeping sickness and Chagas disease respectively.

If you don't have any experience like internships, you're pretty much fucked for a bio job. You're stuck applying to jobs where the job description says that "Education required: High school diploma, bachelors degree preferred." Luckily I was in a neuroscience lab for 2 years and a marine biology for 6 months. Shit's still tough though, even with experience jobs are really scarce.

goodluck man! its all in the preparation!
i just hate the behavioral questions they give you in an interview
"What was a time when you faced adversity?" its like how the fuck do i even answer that.
yeah brah this one time down at the clerb i was getting my swerve on, and the bouncer caught me snorting lines in the toilet, and hes like dont snort that shit and im like get fucked cunt and i racked and and then he broke down the door and kicked me out of the club FML
also, the problem i have with interviews is i dont strategize them well. i work out before all my main points i want to say, but i tend to just unload on the first question and throw out all my ammo, because im unsure whether i will get the right opportunity to throw out some of my main points in later questions. lol, and then i end up repeating the things ive already said to answer later questions. but i mean its tough and you gotta think quickly!

Yeah interviews kinda scare the shit out of me. I prepared like a motherfucker for the last interview, this one was an impromptu interview. I thought she called to schedule an interview, this ended up being a phone interview and I think I handled it well.
Luckily with the science jobs they really don't ask too much of the behavioral shit and I prepped for a week for those kind of questions. They ask about your experience, what you expect from the job, what you see happening in the future and then explain how their lab works. Not that bad of an interview process, just gotta be charismatic.

Just called the microbiology lab for a follow up. I told her I have another job offer and her reply was "Well shit, here's the situation..." She wants to hire me, she said I have the job. Turns out that since the place she works at recently integrated with another institution, getting grant money to actually go into an account has become all kinds of fuckery and is majorly delayed. That means she doesn't have a defined start date for me.
I also have the neuroscience job opportunity, working with infants and kids. Neither of the latter are my cup of tea. But it pays more. But it also starts out part time with possibility of full time. The microbio job starts out full time, but at lower pay. I'd honestly enjoy working in that lab much more, it's just more my kinda science.
So elder shroomerites, if you were me, what would you do: higher pay starting at part time in a field you're iffy about with possibility of full time, or lower pay full-time in a field you think is awesome? Money is kinda tight for me right now (loans like a motherfucker) so it's a tough decision. If I did get promoted to full-time at the higher paying job I could live comfortably... but shitting and crying babies early in the morning. Meh.

Really? Not take the one that I would enjoy more?
I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with my life, and I'm pretty sure working with babies and infants isn't it, even if the pay is $4 an hour more.
I think I already have my mind made up that I'm going to the lower paying microbio job because it's the kinda shit I wanna do and I would enjoy the job and am familiar with the work. If you can provide a valid argument why I shouldn't tell me. Yeah money is important, but so is finding out the path you wanna take for your career. I don't think doing EEGs on babies is the career I want.

Definitely take the one you would enjoy more. I completely disagree with luvdemshrooms - you're young, so you DON'T have to worry about money as much. You have your whole life to get a high-paying job. The experience from this one might help you get another job you like in your field that pays very highly, rather than doing unrelated work that might not help you down the line.

Really.
More money = loans paid faster = less interest = more in your pocket. More money in your pocket should = more money in your 401K which should = earlier retirement.
Pay the bills, then get the job that makes your nipples perky.
Sacrifice now to reap the bennies later.
Doing what you want is great. Making more money now is better in the long run.
In the beginning I did what would make me more money. This led to my being able to retire at... 38. I retire for awhile intent on retiring for good, then I get bored and start another company to have something to do.
To beat this drum even harder... would you rather retire at 50 or at 66?

How do you even know he has loans? He hasn't mentioned that anywhere. I could be making $100k right now, but I choose to work for a smaller company, being a bigger shareholder, that could end up paying out more in the long run. The money right now is not always the best option.

I don't recall stating that it was always the best option. However, it quite often is and for someone who has "loans like a motherfucker" it's almost certain to improve his position now and later in life.

I'd say take the job you'll like. While I don't know your financial situation, in a standard 40 hr./wk. job you'll pull in about $160/wk.
As your science career progresses, that probably won't amount to much. While you don't know for certain, the experience may be worth much more than that.

In my experience, starting out part-time with the possibility of full time = part-time with rapidly dwindling hours a few months into the job. Do the math. Full time at 10 bucks an hour gets you $400 a week. 20 hrs at 14 gets you $280... Though you have to wonder about the possibilities of advancement at the bio job, and worry a bit about a position funded by grants. Tough call. Liking what you do is pretty nice though.

Really?
"Money is kinda tight for me right now (loans like a motherfucker) so it's a tough decision."
My mistake. In that case, it's hard for me to give advice without knowing advancement potential for both gigs / how valuable the experience is, etc.

In my field, experience is pretty much everything, the more you have, the more you make and the further you go. That's a major part of the reason I want to take the microbiology job. I have an idea of what I want to do for graduate school, and this job would help me with that.
Doing genetics work, altering genes, tissue and cell culture, infecting tissue with parasites and observing genetic changes in the parasite. The other job I'd be analyzing brainwave data and playing with kids/infants. Meh. Behavioral research doesn't really interest me that much.

Whatchoo studying and how far into undergrad are you? I've taken big paycuts for the sake of getting research experience before... it's a smart move you're making

I'm done with undergrad. Got my degree in biology. I want to work for about 2 years while figuring out what I want to do for grad school, contemplating a whole bunch of stuff.

If I understand correctly, the lesser pay but more hours job would be bringing in a larger ammount if cash!

Yeah, but if I get brought on full time with the job where I start part time(that pays more hourly), then I'd be making more than the job where I start full time. Confusing, right?

Do what you'll enjoy most. Few things worse than working a job you don't like. Great thing when you enjoy your work.
I'd guess it really depends how bad you really need the $$ and how you think it will turn out in the long run. But my gut tells me go with the job you will enjoy. You'll advance father doing what you love.

I just spoke with the PI in the microbio lab again. She said it's definite that the grant is coming through and I will be hired and she looks forward to working with me. I'll be getting an official job offer letter from HR within the next few days. Turns out the pay scale is about the same as the neuroscience lab. She said to call her again tomorrow afternoon for another update, but I will be working in her lab.
