I think you could be right. No way to know for certain without microscopy. They do look off/odd for cinctulus to me (could just be a phenotype) He should definitely have them scoped.

Pan. fimicola sounds like a way better fit to me than Pan cinctulus. The caps just don't look right for cinctulus.

I think they could be Panaeolus fimicola/ater (you argue whether or not they are unique). Dark caps, and low-nitrogen environment, i.e. no grass (not in a pasture). Get them scoped and compared with fimicola, maybe fimicola and ater are two different species yet no one has provided good enough samples or microscopy.

Not really. Some actives are really boring common mushrooms that no one gives a fuck about and some actives are really cool and rare and shouldn't be consumed for any reason period.
Did you dry this collection? There is a study of the genus Panaeolus being conducted at UT right now and your collection could prove valuable. You should consider saving some that you have now or find in the near future for this purpose.
Good luck with the cult, that will be cool.

This is my first hunting season ever and I'm already interested deeply in cultivating. So follow my future posts on my cult! I'm using a popcorn substrate and I know it isn't quite ideal for pans given there natural habitat is in pastures or in horse trails where I found mine:)

I didn't use agar when gathering the spores but have kept everything disinfected. I scraped old spore prints and put two mushroom caps in a tiny bit of water then injected my substrates through a needle used for my dads enemas. Never been used previously and also sanitized. Is my spores even going to grow mycelium?

I think your collection is interesting and should be saved. You will have to look really hard to find links to the current research on Panaeolus, or you could just PM the user Wintersbefore and ask her to look at your pictures.

Will send em off ASAP. very interested on this discovery, my last thread was positively identified as cinctulus with similar confusion, but I think this recent batch is a mix of fimicola and cinctulus
