Penny Skateboards

Going to school in So Flo and the first thing I noticed was the population of long/cruise boards.
We don't even have hills here yet everyone and their dog are riding them to class.
Well, my bicycle was recently stolen so I figured I'd hit up craigslist and see what I could find. Picked up a sorta-new Penny "Nickel" board (which I have dubbed 'Nickelbag')and must say these things are fun as fuck.
However, most people around here seem to just ride them, I feel like I'm the only one trying to use them for the intended purpose of carving, power sliding, etc. The only things we have to bomb around here are parking garages (SKATING NOT EXPLOSIVES NSA!)but it's such a rush.
I spent $60 on a used board and felt like I made a better purchase than what I'd normally do with that amount of cash
These boards have been around forever but I've never seen or heard about them until now.
I get more of a high skating then smoking, at least for now..
WHO ELSE FEELS ME ON THIS?!?!?

I've wanted a Penny Nickle for a while, they seem fun as fuck. I feel you on getting a high from skating. If I'm ever sad or anything, I go on a nice skate and I'm all smiles
Skating on acid is also a fuckton of fun.

I have 9 hits left so I will deff do some research on that.
I'd recommend going online for a used one, because they're pretty overpriced. I mean, it's good quality and shit but its a piece of plastic lol.
Basically just paying for the name.
The nickels are good if you have big feet like me.
Go for it man!!

People generally aren't trying to eat shit on pavement before getting to their destination. I've almost had my board ran over on the way to class because I was doing this. If you don't have hills where you live then that's probably why you don't see anyone carving.

I've been fucking up a different part of my body every day since arriving here.
It's really hard for me to just ride, has to be some sort of action involved. I dunno man, different strokes.
Any recommendations for wheels or trucks? The stock ones aren't bad but I feel like I could use an upgrade eventually.

I recently bought a Stereo Vinyl Cruiser which is quite a bit like a penny board and yes, it is fun as hell.

Abec11 has good wheels for whatever you need them for but if you want good wheels they're probably going to be almost if not more than you paid for the board.

I have 4 boards already, but I really only use 1. There's one I can't ride anymore, which was the size of a normal cruiser and I've been craving that since I pretty much only use my 23 inch tie dye cruiser. Such a smooth ride. I have another small board, 24 inch globe that's made out of recycled material, and a long board. I might look into a Penny Nickle now.....

I have a couple hours between class where I can come home, study, eat, etc. Pretty much just spent that time riding around.
Straight up addicted to this little piece of plastic. Trying to get my power slides dialed in a little more.
It's gotta be upper 80's low 90's out here but it doesn't matter man, so much fun. Haven't showered in a couple days so hopefully clean clothes will do the trick
How hard is it to apply grip tape? Been skating for like 10 years yet never put my own on lol

If you guys are talking about long boards, I don't think they're meant for tricks involving air. It's mostly a get from point A to point B type thing, pretty fun if you have a small hill.

You can kickflip on a longboard if you know what you're doing. Powersliding/ carving don't involve any air and Penny boards are made specifically for that.

Penny boards are too small for me. I feel like I am about to fall off if I move my foot a little bit.

Cruising is fun, but I'm much more into actual skateboarding. Nothing gives me more of a rush than trying to hit a 10 stair handrail and eating shit. I wear my scars and scabs with pride.
Here's me at 13, trying my first handrail. As you can see, it didn't go well. But that was the day I truly fell for the sport, literally.

That was pretty sick man, I've taken some pretty bad spills too, still working my way up to sets like that though. My biggest accomplishment skateboarding was kickfliping a wide 3 set lol. Super addicting.

Holy shit!! That's the kinda stuff I wanna do. He makes it look easy. Just having the courage to ride down those is impressive but he can deff carve like no one's business.
Does he not have any body hair for medical reasons or for sliding easier when he eats shit?

I don't really like how the trucks are so narrow, I like wide trucks so I'm low to the ground. I don't think I'd like that setup very much at all.
A big thing I always recommend is geting new bearings they make a world of difference. Bones Reds are really great and not that expensive but if you wanna get serious I'd go with Bones Swiss for sure, those bearings are fucking rediculous and are great to have especially if there isn't much for hills and you do a lot of cruising. A couple kicks and you'll be rolling for ever.

I need a skate tool but I think new bearings are in order for sure.
Not much of a "casual cruiser", usually kicking really hard to go as fast as possible so perhaps good bearings are the trick.
Would you say bearing>wheels as far as that goes?

Yeah good bearings IMO are very important as long as your content for now with the setup you have. I'll also really help you get that extra speed to kick out those power slides.
Wheels should be fine if your happy with them now, for power sliding you want some harder wheels instead of the really soft ones that most cruisers have. You want some 83a-86a for the hardness, the harder the wheels the easier it is to slide. I would highly suggest http://www.orangatangwheels.com/ for the best wheels you can get. But I probably wouldn't go spending all my money on too top of the line shit until you start getting really serious about it. Just find something similar to the wheels on that site and get some practice in and figure out what riding style you want to commit to.
Honestly if your gonna get serious about it your gonna want a whole new setup but for now some minor changes will be fine and much cheaper. Trucks, ok so for trucks I really like something nice and wide and will keep you low to the ground. Really helps for bustin out those power slides and gives you a bit more control.

Those wheels cost about as much as the board
I just got it yesterday but it's crazy fun. If it remains to be as amazing in a few weeks as it is right now then I think better bearings and wheels are in order.
Trucks seem pretty comfy at the moment.
Quite impressed with the wealth of info you shroomerites have concerning this area. That's why I love this place

Yeah man it's not cheap to have a real top of the line setup but you don't have to worry about that yet. Right now definitely should get some better bearings, and find some cheap hard wheels that are around 70mm You'll be having a blast power sliding like a beast.
I'm working on my setup tryin to get a board that can handle this kind of shit
Sadly it's gonna have to wait until next summer when I'm not so tight on cash but goddamn I can't wait. These videos always get me so pumped to ride.

I'm already starting to wear out the wheels.
I've been working on kickflips too. Happy to say that the board is still holding up!! Funny how this never would've happened had my bike not been stolen.
Something about silver linings or some shit right??

Well you would be mistaken my friend.
I thought it would be kinda lame at first but this skateboard is good for my soul. Not sure how else to describe it. I have bonded with it in a way that goes deeper than just riding. It is an extension of myself. Similar to how I view my musical instruments.
I woke up yesterday with a sore knee, not sure how that happened but it still hurts to cruise around. Kinda bummed but im about to hit it up out there on my way to class.
