2 Oyster contaminants?
    #18817491 - 09/09/13 12:36 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

So I've been cultivating for a while now but my fruiting room is incredibly low-tech.  It has a soil floor and it some plastic sheet hanging under my deck, taped up and also a plastic ceiling.  I've got an LED light rope strung up and I blow in mist using a pond fogger in a 44-gallon drum and a cycle timer.

Just recently I've run into a bit of a problem, well, ever since I had some attempts at growing Agaricus.

The agaricus all got bacterial blotch, bummer.  But now, even after a 4 week rest period for my room, the blotch is now turning up on my oysters.  Worse than that, the pins seem to get another contam which stalls them and makes them stink.  It causes pale and mishapen caps prior to stalling.  Some of the bags have a perfect first flush and then get infected and the second flush is ruined.  Other bags seem to get ruined for the first flush.

I do have fungus gnats and I use fly paper to control them.

Any advice on what the contaminants and suggested treatments/preventative methods would be welcomed.

Here are some examples of the problems I'm having:

Such a pity to get blotch on such amazing bags!

I'm surprised to see such a wide distribution of  blotch across the fruitbodies - it's moved quite slowly when I've encountered it. Something must be spreading it. My guess is that it's the flies.

That is... if it is blotch to begin with. It's a little unclear from your pics. A picture zoomed in on the contaminated areas would help.

Thanks for the reply, here are a couple more shots.

A close up of some fruit that got mature despite being heavily infected:

Here's another block showing the devastation that the contam can cause, complete with a slug that had snuck in there.  The general moist appearance is from the bleach spray I applied before remembering to take the photo:

Just giving this one a little bump.  It's truly decimating my grows, giving me nothing I can eat or sell.  Any solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Oh that is gross!

I wonder if your humidifying system has bacteria in it.

Sterilize whatever you use to humidify your blocks.

Other than that I really do not know.

You should probably clean the room you grow them in as well.

Great thinking on the humidifier clean.  I have no idea why I hadn't considered that!

Cleaning the room...good idea but it's open air and has a soil floor, so cleaning the wall could help but it won't hold things off for long.

It's strange, it's not on all bags (but is on most), it's not even on some bags of the same species.

Maybe remove everything from that room and give it a bombing of some nasty life killing spray.

I hate doing that but it might be necessary.

The rooms doesn't stink, the rotting nastiness sure does when you scrape it off, very soft and revolting.

Would eucalyptus oil in a fogger be a good natural repellent do you think?  Would it fuck the discs?

Are there any bug sprays that aren't harmful to human ingestion?

I hear that leech lime, lemon grass and caraway are great at repelling insects...I just don't have a supply of any to trial.

I really do not know about using eucalyptus except I know the room
will smell great if you do.

Keep us updated with what you chose to do and the results.

Eucalypt oil won't work . . use 0.3% Hydrogen peroxide and flood the whole thing, or better, use it as a dunk to clone some tissue off
