When to fruit w/ casing layer

Hi all, after great success with my first 4 hpoo trays (did not case - well not properly anyway) I decided to case my next tray with a pasteurized 50/50 verm/peat moss mixture. When should i fruit the tray? i've seen in a few places that i should fruit when i see that mycellium has made it to 20% or so of the surface is this correct? thanks

Case and then fruit right away. Casing is not part of the spawn run.

Hey all, so 8 months after I posted the above post I still can;t really find a definitive answer on this topic.. I have applied my 50/50+ casing layer to my bulk hpoo substrate about a week ago. I can't really see any mycellium poking through as of yet.. Should i go ahead and fruit now? or wait till 20% or 50% colonization of casing layer? cheers

How colonized was it when you cased?

You never will.
Try it several different ways with each strain you grow and use what works best with each. RR

This. For the longest time I cased "out of habit" and ended up working with cloned genetics. Kept reading, "they don't need caseing!" and "look at my massive crop without a caseing" and "casing's a waste of time"...so I tried uncased with that same culture, and got three of the most beautiful fruits ever. Turned out, casing was extremely beneficial for the culture (and environmental factors, I suppose) that I was working with.
As a side note, due to the 'look' of the three beauties, in retrospect, I was probably working with more than one strain...possibly?
anyways,
I found it beneficial to follow the same procedure (bulk substrates, fruting environment, spawn:sub ratio, etc.) then take several tissue cultures that do very well with that procedure (casing or not) and then grow those out, to narrow down the ones I wanted to stick with (doing this, as opposed to isolating on agar)
