What?  Please show me some evidence of this?  I have not been able to get what goes as A. campestris in CA to stain yellow even with KOH.  Also, with that much of a veil, this second find is not A. campestris...

Yellow-tan bruising may have been present in that first find but certainly not straight yellow. I vaguely remember it and it caused much trepidation at first. I think Hashfinger is agreeing the second find isn't A. campestris.

I just wanted to post these pics in the thread because I thought it was an interesting look alike.

Almond-scented Agaricus species are delicious and harmless. The ink/chemical/chlorine-smelling ones are bad, though (not that I'd want to eat anything that tastes like that smell even if they wouldn't make me sick).

NO THESE ARE NOT A. CAMPESTRIS.

Think Pink.

I already ate this about a month ago. There was no trouble.

Well, that's good there was no trouble.
Did you eat it before making a positive ID?

Heh.. yes. Unfortunately I did eat it before a TI confirmed it. Instead I relied on my field guide's description. It was a bit scary after I realized how dumb that probably was but I had a fine night and two others on here, including one TI, confirmed it probably was A. campestris group AFTER the fact.

What about them is not A. campestris?  Sure, it may not be as easy as calling all meadow mushrooms A. campestris, but certainly do look meadow mushrooms minus the possible little bit of yellow staining on the stem that may or may not be there?

Well, be careful... its a dangerous practice to eat mushrooms with out a positive ID first... if you are ever in doubt you should through it out... but some people do prefer to be brave... personally, I like to stay safe...

I am not sure how different it is on the east coast, but out here on the West coast I would possibly ID that as a potential agaricus xanthodermus, or even agaricus californicus, because of the possible yellow staining.. its lacking a veil, but I have seen those random isolated mature specimens that have lost their veil, in which case at that age look extremely similar to A. Campestris... but then for that matter it could also be agaricus arvensis or even less likely agaricus bisporus, if it lost its veil... which wouldn't be bad... the picture makes me think its relatively large, and the pinched off stem makes it hard to tell if it tapers much...

However, where I would stand on that mushroom if I had found it, I would leave it as 'too mature to be sure'... if there were younger specimens around I would still leave that one, picking the younger ones if they were nice and "pink" gilled, fibrous ring with no distinct veil, a tapered stem with absolutely no yellow staining... then I would be confident that I have A. Campestris

The fact you said your mushroom smelled nice is a good sign, definitely.. but with all variables considered, I would have left it out of precaution... plus I like to leave the old ones to reproduce anyways, speshully if its good eats!

The second group of pictures you posted definitely look like bad eats.

When I said think Pink, its because of the Vivid Pink coloration of prime A. Campestris specimens.... when I pick up an argaricus, the gill color is always what I look at first.

Here are my Argaricus Campestris from last week.

All the campestris I've found look exactly like the one in the original post. The stem-to-cap ratio is correct and everything else. The yellowing is probably just the lighting. And the gills are the correct colour for the level of maturity. Although that's just my opinion. It's not like I've done microscopy to be sure that what i have been finding is 100% campestris.

The mature gill color is the same color of all the ones I mentioned... brown/dark brown....

All I'm stressing is to be careful. I have a friend who's currently hunting with the same mindset... a brave one... but it concerns me and I worry about him... I hope he doesn't think like that when his interest moves to russulas... amanitas, etc.... no need to rush the mushroom lust. Lol.

Just stay smart and healthy, positively ID before you eat.

Good luck on your hunts~

Sound advice, which I've found abundantly here. I have really lectured myself about getting too excited about my mushroom finds, and staying focused on proper ID'ing before consumption. I also need to have a talk with myself about not getting too big a head when I feel like I've made the right ID. Too much confidence at this point is silly, I'm still a newb.

Some of my friends feel like the mushrooms find you.. you don't find them.
And they feel that the more respect you have for them, the more they allow you to see them.
As years go on, I am beginning to agree with them. lol.
The less I look, the more I seem to find now days, its crazy.  :awesomenod:

There is always "Mushroom-Fever" in the beginning... you'll never lose interest, but the fever will subside eventually~

I am no expert, there will always be more to know. I have been taking the relaxed approach lately... When I move onto new mushrooms, I let myself find and observe them many times before I decide to harvest and cook them.... I wait until I have burned that mushroom into my brain, to the point that when I see one from a distance, it just clicks and I just know without a doubt that its right... I let the confidence build up and by that time I have become very acquainted with that mushroom, like the back of my hand..
then its time to indulge!

-Its gotten to the point with some varieties that I can literally hunt them blind, I can tell by feel, without even seeing them... its amazing... comes in handy night hunting.. hasn't failed me once!

is that just the stem peeling or was there any veil there?
Gills seem a little pale, maybe just lighting...
...californicus?

i see a veil remnant there.... perhaps a lush youngish campestris~
