Here's a few pics.

Found in a suburban meadow in upstate NY. Growing single. Dark brown spore print. Nice scent.

I don't think it is campestris. Campestris does not bruise yellow.

I didn't really notice much bruising on the stipe after I crushed it a little.

Also, the base is very very yellow. I don't think the cap of A. campestris has squamules on the cap either.
I wish I knew what it was though. Sorry.

Damn. I was hoping this would be easy to ID. This may label me as pretty dumb, but I sauteed and ate it and it was nice. :/ this was after I looked at the field guide a bit. Derp.

Many agaricus look very similar. If you are not practiced in idendtification you might have been mistaken. Even those who are practiced can make this mistake. I don't think you will die if it is n incorrect ID but you probably won't have a very good night. Well, if it does not make you sick then we know it is edible.
You said it smelled nice. What do you mean?

OP ?

Looks like Agaricus campestris group minus the yellow on the stem base, is that a camera artifact?

I agree it looks like A. campestris. Maybe the yellowing is from the lighting? There seems to be a yellowish tinge to everything.

But the taste is something special as far as mushrooms go.

I think it might be a camera artifact, Byrain, since I took the picture under artificial lighting, and maybe the bag or the countertop or something was exposing the lens to a lot of yellow light? In my memory that discoloration was more of a dark tan sort of color. The taste was like a regular agaricus but with a nice sort of nutty flavor like the field guide described. I wish I had found more than one.

I thought I'd post these in this thread instead of make a new one. On a recent walk I found the yellowing ones that Ganzig was hinting at. I was excited until I got them home and saw the yellow at the base of the stem when sliced in half.
The stem is also woodier, and the base is rather club-like. The partial veil was more intact\present as a ring, as well as on the cap margin than in the other agaricus in this thread. The smell is less appetizing, a bit like a chemical.. I guess phenolic? Like people say of Agaricus Xanthodermus.

No doubt about the yellowing on those! Did you ever try the original mushroom?

They bruise an even yellow-tan color on the stipe and cap, which fades to a dull brown. Nothing like the vibrant yellow staining of the foot of the poisonous varieties. Also, scent is a dead giveaway. If you smell anything that reminds you of almonds, chemicals, chlorine, etc. I guess anything unlike your typical pleasant earthy-scented button mushroom is suspect.

What? Please show me some evidence of this? I have not been able to get what goes as A. campestris in CA to stain yellow even with KOH. Also, with that much of a veil, this second find is not A. campestris...
