Very true. But the plants can get to a good size before doing so. Chest height and above in some cases.

A lot of the plants we see on forums are grown in low windowsill light devoid of natural elements to strengthen stems, these are usually etiolated weak plants.

I recommend letting the plant do its thing for a month or two before messing with taking cuttings, thats what I did anyway. Also topping is a good idea, best thing I ever did to my mother plant. When it has a long stem to disperse nutrients it doesnt do so as efficiently as it would if it were topped. Id say wack it in half, put the cutting into a cup of moist soil or perlite (ive noticed faster rooting in perlite, but thats just my opinion) If you cut the main stem in half I'm willing to bet all those little sprouts at the bottom will explode into main branches.
Salvia dont need high humidity to grow once acclimated, but will thrive if grown in high humidity. I purchased a walk in greenhouse on clearance at Fred Meyers for $50 and my plants have probably doubled in size since throwing them in there.

  this

My Salvia plant I had  I turned into a MONSTER bush by clipping it low and making it produce lower FAT branches.  Then the weight was even and it didn't need any support stakes ect.....
The main stem by that time was SUPER THICK.
Grow Salvia into a bush not a tall lanky plant.  Salvia loves to grow into a dense bush. Then you can take 100+ clones from it  $$$$$$

Take a small cup, drench some soil the plop it into the cup, make a hole with a sharpie then stick your cutting in there. (by small cup I mean a small couple inch seedling pot or a small plastic cup with holes in the bottom) Find a large mason jar to put over it or stick it in a tupperware box covered in plastic wrap and mist the inside for humidity. Its not necessary but I have noticed the cutting will root 5x faster in high humidity.
Its looking good man, glad to see another happy salvia grower!

Looking good man. I just figured I should point out, that the fastest rooting times I've experienced were from putting the cutting straight into a small pot of soil. I like to use Chucky Cheese's coin cups, they are perfect sized. Im sure a rooting plug would work great too.
All the cuttings I've attempted to root in a glass of water took literally twice as long as cuttings stuck in moist perlite, or in wet soil. Not to mention that they sometimes will contract into a C shape and are a pain in the ass, compared to just sticking it in soil lol. It must have something to do with the roots having something to grab onto, or the microclimates or something.

fungicides may disrupt the micchorzial (spelling) fungi which aid root growth... i think

Fungus aren't responsible for root production, at all, in any species.....

So long as the soil you use is uncontaminated by bad fungi/bacteria, then the cutting will be fine. Fungicides aren't necessary and you could use rooting hormone, although salvia roots readily without it. Do a test and make up your own mind.

You must understand that in nature salvia can grow to be 10 ft tall hedges, and will produce roots wherever the stem comes in contact with the soil.
I have noticed not only faster rooting times, but the stem also contracts much less often and it doesn't get shocked from being planted into dirt from nothing but water.
If the cutting could get infected and die easier in soil, then salvia would never naturally propagate in the wild :tongue2:
no fungicide or rooting hormone is needed, I simply take a cut, stick it in soil (or in moist perlite for a week or two) and after about a month, there is new growth and roots busting out the bottom of the small pot. Can't get much better than that

Leave the cutting in there for a week or two. I found good results with mixing some vermiculite into the mix, but its fine without. Mist the plant like usual and make sure the perlite is always damp to the touch. After a while you can softly poke around the perlite to observe any root growth, and once it gets long enough(poking out the holes in the bottom), I carefully turn it sideways holding the base of the cutting, then squeeze the cup so the perlite loosens from the roots so the cutting and roots come out of th perlite easily. Ive done it enough times that I don't spill the perlite everywhere when I do it now
I have seen threads where people have a tub with a couple inches of perlite and just stick all the cuttings right in the tub. I tried this method and it worked great, I just like my cup method more

Ehh with a cup that tall, I would poke a hole in the side about 2.5 inches up and pour water into the perlite until some starts coming out the hole, then let it drain.
Now, just tip the cup to check if any water falls out the hole. If there is none, that means you need to water the perlite again.

I usually go with cups that are like 1in-2inches tall, so its easy to keep the perlite moist.
Also, the cutting will regain composure, as long as the perlite is wet enough to maintain turgor pressure.

Precisely, this is also known as a 'Hempy bucket'. The small reservoir at the bottom of the cup keeps moisture in the perlite, and the perlite will naturally wick the moisture from the bottom up to the roots. When you fill the reservoir I doubt you will need to water it every day, as long as you mist the plant like usual and make sure to mist the perlite a bit. The perlite will then give just enough humidity to trigger root growth, whereas I think sticking it in nothing but water lengthens the process a little, that's just my results though, it could have something to do with my water quality or something  You haven't done anything wrong, I'm just giving you some tips that I've found increased my rooting times  I currently have like 6 cuttings rooting in cups of perlite, I've started just sticking a couple cuttings in each cup lol. In fact the branches at the base of your plant look ready to be cut, I usually make cuttings from any branches that have atleast 2-3 nodes and aren't growing vertically, since they will curve upwards and grow at an awkward angle, and eventually fall over. I would keep a branch or two on, and you will notice after making those cuttings that the branches you left will double in size pretty quickly

Also, in your pic you posted 4 days ago, the soil looks pretty dry. That is about the point that I would be filling up a jug and watering that baby  I like to make sure the soil is always at least a bit damp, but dries out between waterings. I fully water my plants maybe once or twice every 2 week period.

Nice job.  See how its starting to bush out nicely now??  It will turn that main stem into a thick woody trunk instead of being a long spindly stem that could snap.

Oh and Salvia does just fine rooting in plain water no matter what anyone says.  I had tons and tons of cuttings I did with water and I even neglected plenty of the cuttings and the water turned green  but they lived just fine for months like that.
If theres one thing Salvia does well it is send out roots.  You could root the stuff in a freakin wet turd and it will still root.  It doesnt have "sensitive" roots lol.
As a matter of fact after a while  where your plant branches out  it may send out roots there even.
