Butt hadd I the answer is not to trust anyone who brags about being old and gaining.
Do older people really know the anser, or are you old shills all full of shit just like I am guessing?

i was just now thinking before i saw your thread of asking the older members if their cynicism has influenced their belief structure. Does it do you think? Are you still able to take a step back and be open minded to new philosophy or new things that might make you question your own belief structures?
I think wisdom definitely does not come with age but with experience and reflection with understanding of those experiences for the present and future.

This is a good question. It cant be all age related as i know several people around my age (30) who are cynical and full of shit.
Im sure cynicism strongly influences someones belief structure because if nothing else, precieving life through cynic goggles, will leave its mark.
Just my opinion as i am not "old" but equally full of shit at times

I just turned 60, so I qualify to answer. I have accumulated a decent tax shelter annuity, and just gained another one from my former employer of 27 years worth 130 unused work days at full pay. I have also seen my stock portfolio (which I inherited from a crazy aunt whose late husband was a gangster) return to the pre-2008 mark. Newly retired, I will begin to receive a monthly pension for the rest of my life. I paid off the mortgage years ago, bought a new hurricane-resistant roof 3 years ago, and a new Trane® air conditioning/heating system for the house. We have zero debt. Four years ago I bought a new Marantz® & Polk Audio® 2-way stereo system for half the house and back yard (first new stereo system in 35 years). These are some of the 'things' I've gained since joining The Shroomery. I've also made friends here, some of whom have visited and shared good times, Christmas dinner, or the absence of time during trips.
Has all this 1st and 3rd chakra materialistic satiation allowed for additional gains on psychospiritual fronts? Yes. I have time to slow down and relate to people in stores and public places. I'm in less of a hurry and more open. My chores are done with more Zen-like mindfulness. I am more available to others, and will consider volunteering my skills instead of insisting on payment for my time, which, being altruistic is an expansion of the 4th chakra. The cool-looking but cheap pocket watch I bought, broke within a month, and I just threw out my remaining wrist watch which I haven't worn in 13 years anyway. I don't have a calendar or day-timer, and I sleep when I'm tired or stay up to all hours (fuck my diurnal rhythms for the time being, I'm in celebration mode)! In fact, my Lady and I have a nightly party with Dionysius. Labor Day weekend we had a brilliant trip on mushrooms with 3 other people. New batch, very electric and long-lasting. I hope to do this at least every two weeks. I can spontaneously sit down in a variety of spots, inside or out, to meditate, if and when the spirit moves me. My decades of stress due to work, bosses, job security, etc. has finally begun to drop away. I've lost 12 pounds and my face stopped looking puffy. After 12 years, the dog-mistreating, assholes next door recently moved away overnight without a word. Their backyard lights were removed by renovators, so I can walk around buck-naked more freely out back, between pool and hot tub, pee hands-free on palm trees with a Forevermore® goblet of vino in hand. God only knows how many books I've read and purchased since 1999, or how much I've learned, but I know I've thoroughly enjoyed all the reading time, and joy has been the transforming element. I've shared some of my insights on these forums. I also got married on 11/11/11 after a 15 year engagement.
Most of the material gains are due to diligence in work, being frugal and saving, but there has also been unexpected good fortune/karma. All of it occurred in time, which happened to be during the time I've been registered with The Shroomery. Is this an answer? What's the question then? As long as my health continues, perhaps I'll get to outlive my Great Uncle Herman who died at 106. Perhaps he'd have lived longer if his bitch cake daughter hadn't moved him from Florida to Michigan. I also lost my dad, my Aunts Rhoda and Edith, my best friend's father whom I've known since 1955, and some friends and acquaintances through life, not death. I'm 14 years older, which is loss of relative youth but gain in experience. If "shit" is lying, or fabricated bullshit, I am guileless. I'd like to think of myself as "a shill for God," as Ram Dass put it, or perhaps for 'seeking Ultimate Reality,' which sounds a bit more philosophical than religious. Lastly, as an elder member of The Shroomery, I'd like to espouse that one can remain young at heart despite one's chronology, and that the secret to that is a joyful heart, and a mind with wonder.

Life didn't get good for me until I turned 43. But, you're right, it has been for the last 17 years.

Glad you're feeling rested and seeing things optimistically, you've earned it buddy.

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care. It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence. I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too. If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

Thanks, I'll take that musical S&G message in the best possible way (although I won't be 70 for a decade ). I don't think I want to live in my mind, especially in memories of the Past. But, as I never had fantasies of a Future, I won't dwell in that imaginative process either. No, I'll continue to dig the Present, and try to Be in the Timeless Now, even as my mind and body dissolve into that Now in death.

You are assuming that older people who brag are untrustworthy? What a conjecture!
Do people get wiser as they get older? It seems that there are too many variables here to really say. You may be able to establish some kind of correlation there, but I think it would be a weak one at best. One person may get wiser and one may become a bumbling fool!

Knowledge speaks wisdom listens.
A wise man is someone who actually listens to knowledge. You're only going to learn more as you get older BUT you're not going to learn any big picture questions. Only things within your ego. Otherwise no. No one knows shit.
If you're asking for real truth you won't find it. But if you're asking for experience you'll surely receive it.
