Does this look infected?
    #18816087 - 09/08/13 05:43 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Background: I got a print in the mail from a generous shroomerite and got to work. Did spores to agar, no problem. Then had a solid flow hood sesh where I inoculated agar and rye with the original agar plates and did some pf tek cakes with an old syringe I had. Out of 10 agar plates 7 rye jars and 7 pf tek cakes only 6 rye jars remain. I think the reason for my contams despite my (homemade) flow hood was that I was wiping everything down with cotton balls which may not have been completely covered with iso and thus maybe had spores on them. I quickly noticed white mould on my agar plates so during my next date with the flow hood I cut out the clean portions with a pressure cooked blade wiped down with pressure cooked cotton balls and I got no contams.

Anyways, since everything else during that one flow hood sesh went completely to shit, I've been skeptical about these jars. One of them had obvious white fuzzy mould growing in random areas so I tossed it, these guys have been colonizing okay (it's been about 2 weeks) which is why I kept them around. I want to try spawning to bulk for the first time and don't want to waste the effort preparing everything only to find these jars are contamed. Sorry for the life story.

grains uncolonized cause of bac or because they're up against the side of the jar?

3 of my 6 rye jars

Anything look strange?

Not the best pic but for this jar if I tilted it so that the solid mass inside moved around, I could see water pool at the bottom of the jar I couldn't see before. This could be because I didn't wait too long to PC the rye after it was simmered but after 2 weeks and being colonized I would think it wouldn't be so wet.

I haven't grown in years and don't want to open the jars up to smell them just yet. Am I being paranoid? Best answer will win a spore print if/when I finally get things to work.

That red looks a lot like what my popcorn GLC jars began to develop; a couple droplets is no a big deal @ this point, and it'll maintain just fine. My guess is that both are byproducts of the myc delving into the kernels' nutrients and leaving some behind.

my post & community feedback here. consensus was that it's A-OK.

When you spawn them give them a good sniff shake them and smell them again if it doesn't smell like mushrooms you got something but they look good to me!
