Some Questions from a newbie

Hey I have two questions. First of all how important is it that your substrait be in complete darkness after inoculation? I just came to the realization the blanket I was putting over my Tupperware container with my cakes was letting a lot of light through. Could this be the cause of my slow colonization? My second question is how bad is it to handle cakes when in the fruiting chamber. I keep picking them up to inspect the little pins and mushrooms on them. How much will this set back the harvest?

You don't need to keep your jars in complete darkness. Also quit playing with your cakes

Also If it helps anything there is bruising on the sides of my cakes possibly due to me handling them? How bad is this?

Afaik, colonization without light has no purpose... Light won't harm the colonization speed.
As for touching the cakes? Well, I expect it's better for them to be left alone, and there is always the risk of you adding contaminates to the surface when handling them.. but they should be fully colonized and pretty resistant at this point so I don't think it will kill them. And I don't know about "setting back the harvest".

Could be from handling or it could be drying out. Bruised cakes will still fruit if given the right conditions

1. light may slow colonization but not all grows are the same ive had jars in light and they colonized quickly.
2.i would refrain from picking your cakes up. it way lead to bruising and accidents. there is no set amount on how much less your harvest would be if any at all.

Excessive bruising may be a sign of something wrong (or just a sign of you touching them too much), but again I don't think the bruising in itself is harming your cakes that much. Do they seem bruised and dry, or is it just "fingermarks" from you?

They definitely feel dry. But then again it's my first grow so I don't know how wet they are supposed to feel

Light doesn't affect the colonisation much, so long as they're not in direct sunlight. Just keep them at a stable temperature. Once they're consolidated, light can aid the pinning stage but probably only through evaporation. Your fruiting chamber should get more light than the incubation chamber.
Picking up your cakes is risky, so it's best to have a transparent fruiting chamber so that you can clearly see all the way around your cakes without touching them. Spray them and circulate the air often, and trust the Tek. It will work.

Do you use a heating pad or reptile rock to keep the temp up when colonizing?

Fair point haha. But yeah; if the bruised areas are getting progressively darker, and seem noticeably more dry and shrunken than white areas then I'd guess it's likely drying out fast.
Regarding heating; unless you live in a very cold area I don't see why you'd need a heating pad. I am currently seeing great colonization in a 23-25c room..

Post some pic's and we can all see what it is that your fretting over...
My first grow was manhandled, it is almost expected.
Remember the old saying, "if you touch your cakes as much as you touch your self, your going to go blind."
That applies here..

If you must incubate use one of these: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/17954773#17954773
If you use a heating pad you'll end up cooking the bottom of the jars
