Re: Can anyone truly be held truly responsible for their actions?
    #18811296 - 09/07/13 11:47 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Just something I've always wondered. Don't get me wrong, i believe we should try and act morally, and when people do terrible things, the suffering they can cause can makes my soul hurt.

But as humans have grown more technologically advanced we've learned about how genetics can play a massive role in shaping who we are. On top of that, there's the environmental influences, and from such a young age... We have little control over how our early lives turn out, and yet they are so important for shaping who we are.

And even when we get more free will as we get older, and can start making decisions...It's still so far out of our control who we meet, how they influence us. I suppose i could never really know, but i for one simply wouldn't have the same values were it not for my older brothers.

Add the cherry on the cake- that life is so random and that some people just have a terrible life experience, and i find it hard to be so critical of criminals or people that do bad things. As a person, of course i feel strongly about what they do, but my mind says otherwise. I suppose its kind of a question of free will and determinism.

Any thoughtful replies appreciated

Agreed. Free will is just a mystic catch phrase.

Does it make you more responsible for your actions the more aware you are of why you commit them?

What I'm trying to say is if you know the reasons behind why you do the things you do, yet you still do them, does that make you more responsible for them?  Or are you still not responsible on the basest of levels, just like the man who has never self reflected on his actions and therefore doesn't understand them/is a complete product of his environment?

All that's possibly true, but it gets into what awareness is and where that comes from. In a practical sense we are responsible, but are we responsible for being responsible? The Sun is responsible for all the light, but it did not choose to be a large ball of burning gas, it just worked out that way.
