Just realized a way to keep an outdoor bed going all year long (as weather permits)

So I'm drinking my mushroom coffee this morning and working in the yard when I spot a random cube had popped up out of the ground. This is near my mushroom patches so I figured it either got started from some loose mycilium or some stray spores. Smelled it, tasted it, it's a cube. Tiny little guy and rather dried out, but otherwise healthy. Upon closer inspection there was also a little pin coming out of the ground and the viel had already broken on the other little guy. I was about to leave it alone since it's not much worth harvesting, but this is when it occurred to me a method of making a continuous bed, just keep feeding it!

So first I started with some bunny poop around the base of the little guy to catch any falling spores. Next some horse manure almost up to the top of the cap (and covering the other little pin that had formed), and finally topped it off with a big mound of previously dried grass which before putting it on the 'mushroom pie' I rinsed and soaked to hydration.

Now time will tell how well this works, but it seems very logical. Mycilium will grow out of live mushrooms and if they ever reach senescence the germinating spores will take over where they left off. So in theory so long as you don't harvest all of your mushrooms and allow them to also drop spores so long as you literally keep piling shit on they'll grow until you stop feeding them or the weather gets too cold. Depending on how big your pile is they may even go dormant over winter since the inside can hold temperature rather well and mycilium can generate their own heat. I'll keep you guys updated on the grow if you'd like to know how it's going, but unfortunately I can't post any pictures for the time being since I have no camera .
