Using composted grass-clippings as bulk substrate?
    #18811556 - 09/07/13 01:11 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

I've got two 1/2 pint PF jars of 1st generation P. cinctulus (wild spores) almost colonized, and am looking into colonizing bulk substrate with them.  I have quite a bit of grass clipping compost in my woods, I can get any level of compostedness from the pile, at the top it's still green, and all the way down it's nice and pure brown with little to no distinguishable blades of grass.  The grass compost pile and my vegetable compost pile also merge into each-other, so I can get any ratio of grass to veggie compost out of the pile too.  Can I use any this for substrate? and if so, what part of the pile should I take the compost from?

you can but it may be difficult to maintain water in that substrate. if you are going to use it i would use a high vermiculite to substrate ratio.

I figure I should probably use the compost that's plenty brown and soil-y, but still has some pieces still recognizable as blades, with just a little bit of veggie compost.

I should also note this is my first ever grow, should I just fruit from cakes?

Right now im using composted grass as an addative to coir. I havent fruited it yet, but colonization was quick and healthy.

Im not so sure how well it will work using only the grass compost. But i would definitely get compost from the grass side only. I feel like the veggie side would be too mushy.
Not sure.

I've heard grass only compost might not have the N to sustain mushrooms well.  Thanks for the anecdotal, glad to know it's possible within reason.

I'll be posting a grass only grow in a few days when the primordial develop. Look for the post in a few days or I'll try to come back here and link you.

It wasn't even composted grass clippings. Just dead clippings from a few days after mowing the lawn.

Oddly enough it has been done unpasteurized, outdoors, in a wet cardboard box.
