Infinite bulk substrate?

I have a bit of an unusual question regarding bulk substates which I havent really seen talked about before.
Just how long does a bulk substrate keep producing fruits? Does a mycelium network "know" how many flushes its produced? My understanding is that unless it becomes contaminated a bulk tub will keep producing flushes until it runs out of nutrients.
Would it be possible to use the now low nutrient mycelium "cake" itself as a grain spawn? By this I mean, rip out a reasonable portion (1/2, 1/4?) of the bulk tub, re-crumble and remix it with a nutrient rich spawn (WBS etc)?
The problem I see with this is that the addition of the new nutrient may be an invitation for contams. Is there any means of basically revitalizing a spent bulk sub to get continuous flushes out of it? It seems like if this was possible it would be a faster way of growing rather than having to redo grain jars etc every grow.

No....spent substrate is spent....and your project would most likely contam before it colonizes much of anything.

My bulk monotub has had mycelium continuing to colonise during fruiting conditions, even up the stalks of fruits. If I was to take this sub, recrumble it and mix it with say, hpoo or WBS, then put it back colonisation conditions, surely this would recolonise and be essentially a brand new sub?

Mushrooms die through a process called senescence after awhile. The cells can only divide but so many times before it essentially gets exhausted and stops producing regardless of the nutrients available. What you're asking about is called superspawning and it isn't recommended for this reason. If anything I'd take your spent substrate and either bury it outside and you might get some more life out of it or mix it with some manure, not grains, but again, you'll only want to do this outside otherwise it *will* get contaminated.

Interesting. What is it about putting it outside that makes you say its less likely to contam? I cant see why pastuerized/sterlised WBS would contam as it is highly nutritious and not in the sterile jar environment. But perhaps mixing with pasteurized HPoo would be a mildly nutritous addittion to get some more flushes without psoing the higher risk of contams from something like bird WBS?

if youre interested in a limitless amount of substrate, i suggest you take a look at this thread:

 ^^this, more competition between contaminants.

Exactly. There's more, much more, FAE outside as well as.. I'm not sure what you'd call it, but everytime it gets rained on/you water it it's in a sense washing away contaminants (and to some extent mycilia), but the one that has most overtaken the substrate will almost always come out on top as a result. Also you *can* add grains outside, but they will take much longer to colonize than manure which will slow them down (and may incur senescence), and wet grains also attracts bugs. Inside we deal with contaminants, outside it's bugs.
