Lend a hand to a newbie?

OK guys, this is my first post. So i believe I should start by saying "Hi." Secondly, I am new to the whole magic mushroom growing. I used this guide for the preparation of two batches. 6 jars in each batch.
http://www.erowid.org/plants/mushrooms/mushrooms_cultivation17.shtml
The first batch 5 out of the 6 took. I lost 1 to contamination a week after the white fuzz started, then the last 4 were fine for about 2 to 4 weeks after that. I started to give the jars about 2 or so hours of sun light a day at about week 2.5 and do air exchanges at roughly 3 week or early 4th week. During week 4 after leaving them in the sun for about a hour, I came to check on them, and saw a grey-ish-black coloring around the top of the white fuzz. I chalked it up to contamination and scratched the whole batch and about 3 days later started this second batch 4 of 6 have started to colonize. It's been roughly 3 weeks since inoculation, and this is the current condition of 1 of the 4 jars (The rest looking very similar. I have 2 other pictures of the same jar in my pictures on my profile. not sure if they would be helpful or not so I didn't want to post here):

Now i have a couple of questions for this community. 1. I've read a couple of other teks, and i have yet to read one that doesn't use some kind of vermiculite or anything like that. My question is, is the verm necessary? I know from reading up on verm that it is good for containing moisture and kind of allows the spores to penetrate the substrate easier. 2. When exactly should I start to do air exchanges and how often? This is probably the question that I wish to have answered the most considering I am not sure when to start the air exchanges. 3. In theory could I use the jars themselves as individual terrariums using this tek? (I figure I should be able to considering the jars are not completely full and should have room for the 'shrooms to grow.) I ask this because I have pets (namely cats) that I am worried about contaminating the terrarium by walking on/near it. I know that the harvesting of the 'shrooms will be a bit difficult since they will be growing inside the jars, but I suppose I'd rather try to tackle that aspect then try to tackle the aspect of keeping the cats from contaminating the terrarium. 4. After looking at the image of my current jars, can you tell me about how much longer I should expect to wait before seeing some kind of pinheads/ribbons?
If there is anything that you guys could suggest/add to this current tek, or give me advise on what I should do differently to make it better/easier for me I'd greatly appreciate it. I think if these ones don't work I'm going to just switch over to the PF tek (like I'm sure 100% of you are already thinking and wanting to flame me for not doing) and trying again.

You just need to watch the "lets grow mushrooms" video series and start over using what you learned in the videos.
This is the absolute best thing you can do

Yeah, b/c it this looks like a mess. OP, watch the lets grow mushroom videos, it'll help you out. There is too much wrong to give you a starting point without referring you to something basic.

Scrape your spore print into the jar in open air! Just make sure the ac is off and your hands are clean

Actually no. I opened this one jar to take the pictures because the sides of the jars are nasty and can't really see inside all that well. The pictures I took without opening the jars came out horrible and out of focus. All the other jars I have not opened as of yet. I was going to wait till i got some responses from this forum before I went ahead and did anything that I would later regret. So it seems that general consensus is start over with Pf tek. Could I follow the videos, but fill the jars 1/4 full (they are quart size) and use the jars as individual terrariums?

As a beginner; definitively. As long as you don't follow an outdated copy of the tek.. this confused me to no end when I was reading up on it myself. The vids that were linked are up to date though, afaik.

I strongly suggest skipping PF Tek and going straight to learning how to make spawn with rye berries, then spawning to bulk using horse poo/straw/gypsum or coir/verm/gypsum or a mix of any of them.
Let me put it this way... Do PF Tek if your only looking for your shroom-wallet to not be empty. Spawn to bulk if you want your shroom-wallet to be stuffed along with having shrooms in the bank.
