Some nooby questions
    #18811256 - 09/07/13 11:31 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So hi...

I was wondering if it would be possible to grow mushrooms right out of the jar after the mycelium has covered the entire inside of the substrate. By that I mean it`s totally white, so to me it would then kinda make sense because then other organisms can`t fight over the substrate since the psilocybe shroom has already taken over the entire food supply.

Let`s say I do all the fundamental pieces and steps and inoculate successfully. Then when the mycelium has grown and covered the entire inside, could I just open up the jar lid and let it grow inside a box of some sort which has been disinfected. Could I drop the box? Should I add vermiculite or could I do just fine without it?

It is possible to do this, inside or outside of a terrarium:

The harvest is low so this is not often done.

Yes.

You are describing what is called "invitro"...
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/538054#538054

One can certainly fruit directly from the jar.  I don't know if results can compare to other methods of fruiting, though I doubt they will.  I have never done this method, but it has been done successfully in the past.  Google/search for invitro, and you may find a better place with pictures lol.  I hope defining your possible method makes finding info easier.

Good luck!

I see...

Well what would be a low harvest? Of course that depends on the size of the jar, but what would you call as an average low harvest for a normal sized jar. 1 mushroom, 2, 3 ...

I was thinking of simply pouring the contents of the jar into a plastic box, spreading it out and across the surface. Then placing the box inside of one of those filter bags. Since I keep the  substrate which has mycelium grown into it, inside a filter bag, wouldn`t that eliminate the need for vermiculite.(Correct me if I am wrong).

I would suggest that If you are mixing spawn with anything that you look into bulk substrates.  Bulk substrates consist of: Straw, coir, vermiculite, horse poo etc.  No you do not need vermiculite, however there is always a quiet debate about the nutritional benefit of it.  My opinion is that vermiculite is nothing more than a rock that acts like a sponge, and absorbs water and nutrients from the substrate it is mixed with.  It has been noted that vermiculite is broken down via mycelium excreting metabolites, and it may get some nutritional benefit from the rock, but by-in-large it is accepted that there is little nutritional benefit if at all.  This is not a debate that needs to be brought here.  I will not derail this thread by debating benefits of verm.

The fact about vermiculite is that cultivation most certainly benefits from addition of it.  There are no other materials on earth that have a similar weight/water and cation exchange capacity.

Another option that you may have if you are looking at "mixing and putting into a box" would be sphagnum peat.  It is "non nutritious" but does hold water very well.  This method is referred to as "cased grain" and is successful by definition, but does not compare to "spawning to bulk".

There is no way to predict weight without using isolated genetics, which is more advanced that simply using a spore syringe.

I started my studies directly with grain and bulk.  I could not find the correct jars for PF tek for months, and because of lack of availability I moved in other directions.

If you spawn out of the jar, making sure that your substrate has proper water content is the number one concern.  Grains alone generally cannot hold enough water to benefit fruits.  Adding even something like sphagnum peat increases yields many times just because of the additional water provided.

And no, I would not use the filter bag for anything other than to colonize your grain.  Yes you could fruit from it, but spending a few bucks on a plastic tub will do you much better.

I cannot and will not advise you what you should do.  That is your decision when the time comes, but here are some terms to research:

"Cased grain"
"Bulk with coir and verm"
"mono tub"
