I went out and bought some yogurt. Then I re examined the pictures... seems the sub depth is around 2 1/2 inches. Is this a fine depth for shroomies on this small a scale? Most teks recommend 3-4 inches.

Also, some of my cakes are invitro pinning. Should I just pick them and then crumble the cake, or should I just fuck those pins up and crumble them too. I believe I know the answer, but just in case cultivation defies logic, I want to be sure.

A depth of 2-3 inches is fine. your not gunna be getting monster shrooms is all. smaller the better right? right.

I'd pick the pins and eat em up. you can just crumble'em right up though, the myc will recycle em.

No bulk sub. That is a plain pf cake (brown rice flour + verm) in a slurpy cup. No perlite or anything. The moisture in the cake was enough to maintain the humidity in the cup. Easy cheesy.

I'm not sure what the yield on that was. I would guess it would have been more or less an eighth dried.

Aight. Well the goal is an eight per cake. Hopefully my current brf cake shrooms mature by saturday so I can just eat the pins with the harvest.

I could probably bulk sub that anyway. Sameish yield I would imagine

I have polyfil from a pillow. Some people say to sterilize it, some people say not to. Should I? I figure I could just boil it.

Dude, I hope it's a new pillow... Otherwise that's a terrible idea. either way, sterilize for sure.

Stuffed animals and pillows and such harbor a lot of gross shit.  Go by a bag of Polyfil.  It is not very expensive at all and will last you a long time.

Aight I'll buy some. I have another question. Side pinning; does it really matter other than aesthetics? It is going to be really impractical to put black liner in these small things, and I read that the tape will have no effect since side pinning is attributed to microclimate, not light

Side pins are a major bitch. I recently did a monotub that was a pain to line, so I decided to see what would happen it I didn't.

Yeah that was a pain. But I found a tek on how to easily line your tub. Not sure where to find it, but you just flip the tub over and place the bag on top. Then cut it down and tape the edges together to hold them in place. Then wipe everything down with some alcohol, pull the shaped liner off the top and put it into the tub. It should fit right in the bottom. Easy as wrapping a present and should work for any size container

I don't get it... if tape doesn't do anything, how did he get such a good pinset on the top? He didn't use trash bags

Side pinning is only attributed to light - where light hits the mycelium, it pins. You can put black tape around the bottom of your container, or tape some aluminium foil or something that blocks out the light.

I am sorry but this is just plain wrong.

Light does not cause side pinning, FAE does.

When the substrate consolidates, it shrinks, creating a microclimate between the substrate and tub walls.

This is why we recommend using plastic liners, as the plastic will stick to the substrate as it consolidates, eliminating the microclimate, stopping side pinning.

Light hitting the substrate will help the substrate pin where the microclimate it best, this is not necessarily going to be where the light is hitting the substrate.

Some people use clear liners and get 0 side pinning.

The thought process behind this is that the substrate will derive energy from the light, while at the same time stopping FAE from hitting the sides of the substrate.

Bottom line is that light does not cause side pinning, FAE does, so taping the bottom of the tubs is pointless.

Interesting - IME experience, it was light exposed areas that pinned... Haven't been here in ages, and havent seen those results. But I am familiar with substrates shrinking and pinning from those spots from the humidity building up and producing a perfect microclimate, though I was under the impression its was also because that spot was now exposed to light.

I always thought it was a combination of humditity AND light.
