not much fruiting ... what's wrong?
    #18809968 - 09/06/13 11:26 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

hi, first time growing, so far so good, have 6 cakes safe in a poor man's pod for about 6 days now, but i have a question ... see the pics ... WHY do i have just 2 big shrooms and nothing else? aren't a whole bunch of little guys supposed to sprout together? can you tell from the pic what is going on in there? too wet? too dry? too hot? too stale? too dark?

and are the stems supposed to be so fat? oh yeah, why is that one guy navel gazing?

setup: humidity seems good, maybe too good, lotsa condensation on the sides. natural indirect light from a window, and indirect heat from sitting on top of a beer fridge.

i put in a lot of work to get this far, i don't want to blow it now.
thanks a lot! signed,

Your setup is missing FAE, super critical

I'm somewhat of a noob as well but Ill try to help til one of the veterans comments on this..

1. You say poor mans terrarium. To my knowledge that    is a tub and a drip shield.  I see you have perlite in your tub.  So why not drill the holes all over and elevate it to make a SGFC.  They work MUCH better than the poor mans terrariums.

2. I recently made a set up similar to yours (clear tub, perlite, NO holes in bottom but used air pumps) and I FAILED miserably.  My cakes looked just like yours, plenty of mycelium growth but only 1 or 2 fruits and NO second flush. The reason being not enough FAE with the pumps and because of stale air Trichoderma spead everywhere.

I drilled holes in bottom, tossed contam'ed cakes and disinfected the SGFC. Birth new cakes, dunk n rolled, and in 48 hours or so had 20 massive pins.

Having the holes in all 6 sides (1/4in, 2 inches apart) and elevating it makes ALL the difference.

IMO drill the holes and elevate or get used to extremely small flushes and get ready for contams. =(

ok i just searched the site for FAE but can't find what it means ... ? is it fanning?

in the instructions for the poor man's pod it says "Do you still have to fan with the pod? -- No, the air pump handles that." it is supposed to be fully automated.

but i also just re-read part of the grower's guide where it says
"If the cakes refuse to fruit but continue to form more and more fluffy mycelium this is an indication that the humidity is too high and needs to be adjusted downward. "

a closer inspection of my chamber shows large clumps of white fluff sticking out the sides. i'm guessing too much humidity. agree?

FAE = Forced Air Exchange (via fanning mostly)

What Tek are you using for a Poor Mans FC? Maybe Im wrong but they are not automated.  CO2 will build up and the air WILL turn stale and eventually induce mold.  You need to be fanning and misting 3-5 times a day.

Some will argue that unless your fruits are growing mycelium on their caps, there is no such thing as too much humidity while in the fruiting stage.

You mentioned pumps? How many and where are they located in the FC??

Finally.  With my personal experience, unless you turn that into a monotub, youre going to HAVE to drill the holes and elevate to get proper FAE and evaporation.

ooohhh kay. i am using the poor mans pod which says, "the fresh air being pumped into your fruiting chamber lifts the C02 out of your fruiting chamber so there is no need for fanning or misting." the pump setup is exactly as described there.

it's doing a great job of humidifying, which is done by the pump forcing fresh air through the water in the bottom of the tub, so it should be getting enough fresh air.

Fresh Air Exchange.
What ever your using for your chamber you need holes. Build a small SGFC, shutgun fruiting chamber. Or.. tilt your tote lid a bit to help let air flow, you would need a running fan in the room to do this.

for now i just hooked up a second pump (i was using one pump with a splitter) and opened the second hole in the lid. i had one hole stuffed with cotton because i was worried about moisture escaping, but it seems that is not an issue so far. these measures should increase the air flow through the chamber. i will also keep a close eye on it and make further adjustments if necessary.

anyone with experience using this kind of FC want to chime in?
thanks everyone so far.

Pumps are for fish, take the lid off and fan it for a minute at least 2 times a day.

OK i'll do that too.

has anyone used this FC with success, without fanning? just curious.

We do not mist/fan to remove co2, that should happen naturally anyways.

We mist the cakes to replace lost moisture, and we fan out the chamber to promote evaporation, which is a main pinning trigger.

Build a proper SGFC for best results....

i had read that a while back but then decided to use the poor mans pod setup since it said it needed no maintenance and that is a good thing as i cannot always be around.

what is the theory behind that, biologically? (why would that make them pin?)

anyways i started fanning. there are a handful of baby shrooms now that i didnt see last night, and the two big ones in the pic ... have almost doubled in size since yesterday!!! is that normal?

this is exciting!

Yes we fan to promote pinning. The whole purpose of holes in a tub is to have a consistent FAE throughout the day. Lately because im not home as usual I would fan twice a day. There has been a few days where i didn't fan at all.

Congrats on the baby shrooms!!

Ive looked for an answer to why evaporation causes pinning but I havent found an official or "technical" answer yet.

However I am a plant science major and I know that the evaporation and FAE are key factors in mushrooms enviroment.. and shrooms know/are genetically engineered to produce fruits under these conditions WITH those key factors.  Though they are fungi, they still can tell when theyre being tricked.  If there is fresh air then there is usually open air.. and mushrooms then know they can grow and produce fruits in the open air.  Unlike in their jars. (Though we all know about invitro pinning)

Just my measly 2 cents.

on my first grow i used a 1 gallon tub for two cakes. just two cakes and a few holes. taking the lid off and misting 2-3 times a day. and it was plenty humidity and FAE to get three good flushes.

here's what it looks like now ...

question: should i pick these big guys now?
i have heard some people say that you should not let the shrooms grow too big. i have heard other people say that you should harvest them all at once.

secondly, why are the stems so fat and caps so small, twisted and deformed? and should mycelium be growing on the stems like that? (should i remove it after picking?)

Everything in this picture looks starved for FAE.

Yes.

It does not matter if you pick the big ones now, or them all at once....it only effects your final wieght.

I would pick them as they mature, and the 2 big ones look pretty much mature.

They are mutants....that is what mutants do.

No it should not be growing like that, that is a sign that tells you they need more FAE.

Build a proper SGFC to avoid your future fruits from looking like that.

No need to remove it.....it is still active.
