So was the sprite character a boy or a girl or some kind of hybrid? I remember at one point it was hitting on the female character but I cant remember if it was revealed or not. If it was I don't remember.

There are songs in that game I have had stuck in my head for like almost 20 years. (hard to believe game has been out that long..) That's how you know something is good. The temple level especially. The one with all the bells.. man I can hear that shit crystal clear backwards and forwards in my head anytime.
Just made me think of The Oracle Dark Lich track in SoM
if you listen closely it's the balinese monkey chant that happened to be in Baraka

Holy shit! That's nuts.. especially since Baraka was released like 3 months after Secret of Mana. I guess Square must have had some inside preview of it.
That Mana song is one of the ones that sticks in my head too. I remember that being some of the most epic music.. that was the final fortress I think.. that shit had me so pumped.

Dunno, would guess Baraka just popularized the whole thing to us Americans, but Asians have a better chance of knowing about it independently of that film... but just found interview with SoM's Composer, Hiroki Kikuta, just now
Kikuta: So, the battle of the Dark Lich... When I was creating this song, I created the song based on the character. The character is a very evil character and so I was thinking that music would be something to put a curse on you and tie up your heart, your emotions. I wanted to this track to be something like that. So I was thinking, 'What kind of things would put a curse on someone? What kind of music? What kind of sound can put a curse on somebody?' And then I found this music from Bali... It's like a missal at church, but it's the kind of music that is like putting a curse on somebody.
Whole thing is pretty fuckin' cool

Ya well I'm sure they didn't invent it for Baraka.. That's just so cool Kikutu based the Secret of Mana song on that. I've heard both so many times and I never made the connection

Is totally possible Kikutu learned about it from Baraka though, these type of films hit indie film festival circuit... sundance/TriBeCa etc. like a year or more before they are released... Am kindah jonesin for some oldschool action rpg now.... U ever play Crystals for NES?

Aye, typo, Crystalis.... that game was so rad, really my whole introduction to cyberpunk post apocaylyptic fantasy when I was maybe 9yo... . modern world is destroyed and magick is reborn, was really dope SoM type gameplay for NES, pretty much defined the genre as far as I know.
Although if you wanna rewind time into side scrolling action rpgs, this game Faxandu was pretty much my first action orientated RPG for NES, game was so sick Though it was before even saving your game, the passwords were really the hardest part, it was insane, like long passwords with uppercase and lowercase and spaces like they were generated from LastPass Save States with emulator would kick ass for that game

Hahah yep I remember Faxanadu really well. Those passwords sucked! Crystalis sticks out in my mind though as having better gameplay and music if I recall
