Don't use a TiT colonize on a shelf with ambient light at room temp.

ive been told otherwise by a trusted cultivator
benefits are that colonization times are alot faster.
also its a neat little place to keep all your jars together.

RR's notes state room temp is fine and ambient light is actually benefical to mycelium growth.

I used to use TiT when I first started but have long since ditched it, colonization times have not suffered and contam rate has actually become nonexistent

higher temperature does not result in contamination.
contamination results in contamination.

even if you have a full colonized jar sitting in room temperature it could still be contaminated even if it looks 100% healthy.

and if warmer temperatures will cause contaminants to grow more rapidly
then im all for it shows me which jars i have to get rid of.

that being said.
this is my first time doing grain so its all a learning experience
if it turns out i dont like the TIT then ill get rid of it.
but i cant give my opinion on something i have never used,

I agree with blue. Incubators aren't worth the trouble unless you live in an igloo. You're only going to see growth speed up a small amount. I'd save my money

Endless argueing on this topic.  If you plan on incubating just be very cautious. Those heaters break constantly! When the thermostat breaks your jars will be at 100f before you can help it.
I only incubate in the winter now. Which is necessary here bc my ambient room temp is a mere 65f. Im serioysly sick of replacing those water heaters though. It adds up.

Do you have any idea why? I've had some running in my aquariums for a couple years.

I think it is because most of us at times cannot comprehend how simple this process really is.  If your house is maintained at 72f, the only reason to use a TiT is to increase colonization times a few days at most.  I used one, and ditched it after a while.  I only used a heater with no air stone, and had no issue with uniform heat in the top tub.  Plastic is horrible at exchange of heat.  Consistent temperature is more important than a specific temp.  Most of us agree that cubes will colonize and grow from low 60F all the way up to ?????.  I have colonized grain bags and jars in a consistent 62f room last winter.  It took longer than expected, but did exactly what it should have.

This discussion still goes on because a majority of the time it is a personal preference.  Seeing how colonized mass can generate heat, I could even think that simply storing these in a plastic tub would be more than enough to avoid drafts and maintain semi-constant temp.  I haven't studied that yet.

A lot of times noobs want to use an incubator because they hear it will decrease their colonization times and they want results asap. True a properly built incubator will increase colonization speed slightly but I think most of us don't mind waiting a couple extra days if it means we have one less thing (an incubator) to deal with.

I like the idea of Franks TIT. Don't know if I'll ever try it out myself, but none the less, I like it.

This.

You just won at being a shroomery member.

As far as the water temp, you will want the 50w. It should heat in 12-24 hours. I've never had a heater break or temps get too high. It works great...just make sure to pour a lot of bleach into that water. Make it smell like chlorine
