Prickly Pear Cactus (Opuntia) possible precious alkaloid content?
    #18810096 - 09/07/13 12:33 AM (10 years, 5 months ago)

So I was reading about prickly pear cacti on wikipedia(article at bottom) to see if it was worthwhile to grow them to try the fruit they produce, just as good. They mention that some alkaloids are present in the fruit of some species.(but what?!)

Then down bellow the medicinal uses section, they have this line "Opuntia is also added sometimes to the entheogenic drink Ayahuasca.[16] Psychoactive compounds and derivates thereof have been confirmed in some species. These include 3,4-DMPEA,[17] 4-hydroxy-3,5-DMPEA,[18] and mescaline."

Does this mean small amounts of mescaline have been detected in prickly pear cactus fruit?!

I think the small amount of phenethylamines in prickly pear fruit like mescaline in trace amounts of analogues of mescaline makes the fruit taste little "bitter" cause of these alkaloids but amount of getting experience out of them would possibly teed tens of kilos cacti material to extract one trip.

There is possible lots of mescaline cacti, difference between san pedro and mescaline in it is high amounts of mescaline to give experience out of them.

One example is stetsonia coryne, there has been reported trace amount of mescaline, but no one I have heard of has even tried to tripped off..

Yeah that's the thing, the key piece of info is how much there is in a given plant. Same goes for DMT containing plants, all kinds of plants have some DMT but not all have usable amounts. TIHKAL has a list of about 40 cactus species reported to contain mescaline.

Opuntias have alkaloids, including mescaline, but in trivial quantities.
For instance, fifty kilos of Opuntia acanthocarpa pads would have a good 500 mg dose of mescaline and an equal quantity of 3,4-DMPE. Opuntia basilaris has the same cotent of mescaline and a smaller content of 4-OH-3,5-DMPE. Fifty kilos of Opuntia echinocarpa would have less than 500 mg of all 3 alks. A metric ton of Opuntia spinosior would give a mid-level dose of mescaline.
Keep in mind that ayahuasca is medicine. Not all its additives are hallucinogenic or MAOI's. Many cacti have non-alkaloidal compounds that affect heart function, sooth the stomach, reduce fertility, prevent hangover, etc. and some have purely astringent alkaloids that help to kill bacteria and parasites in the intestines (one common use of ayahuasca).

I dont blame you for hoping, tho

I suppose I never really expected to be able to trip off it. It's just interesting that it gets produced at all.
