Super fast mycelium growth? Thai Pink Buffalo Grow:: WITH PICS!
    #18808960 - 09/06/13 07:30 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hello all,

This is my second grow, so I am fairly new to mushroom cultivation and just had a few questions/would love some feedback or suggestions on my grow.

On 8/26/2013 I inoculated 12 1/2 pint jars with Thai Pink Buffalo spores following the BRF tek on this website (I used a boiling pot of water to sterilize vs a pressure cooker). I then placed them in a plastic container in my closet.

On 8/28/2013 I saw the first signs of mycelium growth on the inoculation points.  This scared me a bit because my first grow took well over two weeks to show first signs of growth.

On 9/2/2013 the jars were growing rapidly; I feel like it was too good to be true.

Today (9/6/2013), here are some pictures of what the jars look like:

Do these look like they have healthy mycelium growth?  They do no look contaminated to me--but again the newb that I am they might all be.  Please let me know!

Is it normal for the strain to colonize this quickly or is this a case of cobweb mold?

You're good dude. Those jars are colonizing nice.

I am not a cake expert, but it looks correct. It does seem fast, but IF you did a MSS (Multi-spore syringe) and somehow the spores germinated within the syringe, it would make for fast colonization.  "Strain" and "Variety" Discussions are frowned upon, and there is a "strain" discussion thread.  Every user reports different times of colonization.  I loved my PB, and am in the process of bringing it back from an old liquid culture.

Ill check back on this from time to time.  Overall, it looks like you used a SAB and are taking similar precautions with colonization by using a tub to store your jars in.

You are looking golden babe! That is absolutely healthy mushroom myc. No doubt about it. Part of the reason you are seeing such great results is because you are using the proper jars. So many people get those tall skinny jelly jars then wonder why they're jars take well over a month to colonize or stall on the bottom.

I have used both types of jars and I was just amazed how much better those short widemouth jars performed.

Don't get impatient and not give them an extra week to consolidate. This is an important step in pf tek and will greatly increase your yeild.

:goodluck:

I love the picture on the bottom. Symmetry is awesome. It's a perfect example of proper patient technique making picture perfect results.

Hah-it was my favorite pic of them too, had to save the best for last. Just so gorgeous and growing so perfectly.

I'm definitely feeling better about them, thank you so much for the feedback. I suppose I'll let nature take it's course then!:thumbup::thumbup:

Did you monitor the temp when you used the steam method? I've been using that method and it seems to take up to two weeks just to see growth :/ I think I might be getting it to hot.

The temperature of boiling water is pretty consistent around 212 degrees F.

I boiled these bad boys using a vegetable steamer inside a pot (to keep them from touching the bottom) for 90 minutes on an electric stove.  I carefully monitored them, adding hot water to the pot as it evaporated, but always keeping the water level at about an inch.

I think this kept my cakes from drying out and helped speed up mycelium growth, because 10 days later there is still some condensation left on the inside of the jars.

psillyshroomer said the jars have a lot to do with the rate of growth, are you using the shorter/fatter jars?

The tall jars won't delay first signs of growth. They just cause slow colonization and stall outs because the myc attempts to grow outward and evenly in a circular pattern.

tall jars for me. I think I'll pick up some short fat ones though.

Correct. Also the bottom of the tall jars becomes compacted and it can't get proper ge.

Some spores take longer to germinate. Sometimes they have already germinated in the syringe which is what probably happen in this case

DON'T TILT THE JARS!  It can/will disturb the dry verm layer which can/will contaminate your jars.

Besides that though everything looks good, nice job!

After this grow I would suggest switching to a bulk grow and start learning agar.

sorry for thread jacking but it might and it might not....

I am currently doing grains ATM but I allways do my 12 BRF jars as well just for fun

The other weekend my mate was in town and I only had 4 to 5 GRAMS of dry mushrooms between 3 off us . it was my mates first time on them and consuming them he spewed half way through his milk shake and wasn't on the level we were so he was quite adamnt to have more and I had none left ...

I read that you can trip a little off spent cakes but I only had 50% colonized cakes ATM but he wanted to be where we were so I sacrificed one which I new wouldn't work to begin with but just to please him I cracked one took the verm layer right off and took it out sat it on the bench with my unclean dirty as hands and pressed if spots were mycelium was present to see if there was any bluing at all ...

NO bluing so I was like see I told ya so ... I then just chucked it back in its jar with no verm layer and like I said it was only 45 to 50% colonized ...

checked it the other day and what do ya know not one contamination and it was the first to fully finish colonizing out of the 12 ..

 WEIRED HUH... pure luck maybe but I couldn't belive it

ANY INPUTS ABOUT THIS ????

I use tall jars. I grind my own brow rice and use coarse verm. Fully colonized 17 days after inoc.

I think the more coarse and airy the sub is the faster colonization time.

Yeah your thimking is correct. That is one of the reasons grains colonize so fast

I had the same experience with PB noticeable germination in 2 days and fully colonized in 1/2 pint plastic containers in just under 10 days!  Fruiting was a little slower tho like a day behind the pesh I was growing side by side
