When you find one in a young white state, you can peel off the pore surface which is a mm or so thick, and cut it to size.

Ah, thanks.  I bet this would work with any of the Ganodermas and Fomes also.

Can Reshi be used to encompass a genus or is it used only for the Ganoderma Lucidum? I have read that Lucidum, Tsagae and organense are genetically similar but grow from different substrates. For example Tsagae suposedly only grows on hemlock while Oregonense grows on Douglass fir. They also differ microscopically in size and shape.

Well that Is actually a hard question to answer. Basically this it is a piece of perishable food. Mushrooms can be a host to numerous bacteria and pathogens that can cause food born illness.

The first questions I would ask myself are;

Does this mushroom look like it is in severe decay (does it look fresh)?
Does it smell putrid, rancid or rank?
Does it feel putrid?
Most bacteria can be killed in a long steep of boiling water.  It is not the bacteria that gets you sick though, in most cases, it's their accumulated toxic excrement which will leach into your water..

Good post.  @ OP, it's hard to tell whether it's old and moldy or growing new mycelium and just eating itself.  Looks pretty old and past it's prime to me.  What I would do is throw this one out, note the location where you found it and come back a few times after warm rains.  IME, g. lucidum likes the heat of summer with lots of rainfall, and can grow very large in a matter of days.  Once you find some fresh conks, now that you can confidently ID it, you could harvest some.  Look up how to make a reishi tincture online, that is IMO, the easiest and best way to take advantage of it's health benefits.

Best to slice and dry or tincture as soon as you finish photography/sporeprint, same day or no later than next day after collection, frig it overnight if you must.  These fungi break down very quickly.

That looks rotten to me.
