Alright post a really old picture of a species from when you were a budding newbie.(especially if it's embarrassingly crappy)
Agrocybe pediades 4-27-11
Then add your most recent picture of the same species.
Agrocybe pediades 8-4-13

This excercise is meant to bring us on a trip down memory lane and show us how much we've stepped up our game, so don't be afraid to show off your really terrible photos first.

I've noticed my patience for mushrooms has gotten better, although I try to pick more then I take pictures. So unless I get a real nice camera, the quality will stay nearly the same.

My first P. zapotecorum pic from 2007:

One from yesterday:

My first P. yungensis pic from 2009

A pic from the same spot, 2 weeks ago:

What did I do differently? Used a tripod, closed down the fstop, used a white umbrella to block and diffuse the sunlight, and used reflectors to bounce some of the light back up on to the stems and the gills.

Is anyone using the chrome or saturated color setting on their cams? I'm slowly absorbing my cam settings and I see that. There's so much vivid saturation in a lot of folks' shots I thought maybe that was one of the tricks.
But prolly not, you're probably doing it all with light, huh? Or longer exposures?

"The initial quake was a 6.6 but fairly shallow. I felt it as a prolonged up and down vibration followed by a jolt forward and then to the left, like square dancing."

I used to use way too much saturation and it was messing up my photos, I cut down on it a lot.

You need to be careful with the color saturation. Too much ruins a photo. I have found that if I am photographing a really bright orange mushroom (Mycena leaiana), I have to turn the color saturation down a notch or 2, or else my photos end up looking like Shroomydan's.
If the colors in the photo are bland, you can turn up the color saturation in the gimp a bit, however it is better to do it directly in the camera since it has access to the raw data. You can only change .jpg's a little bit because the raw data is lost. DSLR's have a setting for the color saturation, cheaper cameras usually do it with a vivid mode, or not at all.
I almost always use long exposures, but not for the colors. I use long exposures because I choke down the fstop to give more depth of field, and also turn the ISO down as low as it goes to give the least grainy image. With iso 100 and f/16, and the dim light in the forest, I typically need an exposure of around .5 to 2 seconds, and sometimes up to ten seconds. You need a tripod for that, unless you want to just set your camera on the ground or on a bean bag or backpack, which can be good for small mushrooms.
Usually for small mushrooms though I take the center rod out of my tripod and flip it upside down so the camera is hanging upside down just an inch or 2 above the ground.
If you are doing long exposure mushroom shots I highly recommend a remote shutter release. It is just a switch on a wire, but is way better than using the 2 or ten second delay to avoid camera shake. Best $10 I ever spent.

Is there a reason you go for a deep DOF? I personally like having as much as possible in focus, but most people advise me to keep the subject the only thing in focus.

I want all of the parts of all of the mushrooms to be in focus. Having only part of the cap in focus ruins a lot of good photos.
With DSLR's you can use the DOF Preview button to see if your DOF is deep enough to get everything, however I think it is always better to just take a picture, and then zoom in to see if your DOF is deep enough. This is another place where a tripod really helps, you can keep opening the aperture until part of the mushrooms are blurry, and then close it a little bit. That way you can always shoot every shot with the largest aperture that works, decreasing diffraction distortion.

Ah-hah! Just checked my cheap Velbon tripod, no can do. But this info comes in time for me to make this a requirement on the next cheap tripod I buy. I'd read of tripods that allow you to swivel the head down, but that still leaves the camera way too high... AND this gets the cam upside down for the flash to illuminate from under.
What tripod do you have that does this? I looked at the links for the reflectors but they were expired so no joy on exactitude. There were close to 300 search results for reflectors on that site, toxic option overload.

It is the Manfrotto carbon fiber travel tripod. Costs about $160 on ebay. I like it and would recommend it. Also has a nice quick release.
It was really hard to get the center pole back into the tripod until I figured out that you need to open the lever, stick your finger in the hole and press on the plastic part that moves, then put the pole in.
