self healing injection ports on PF jars
    #18807796 - 09/06/13 03:13 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Hi,
I'm making lids with tyvek filters and self healing injection ports for PF tek style jars. Has anyone else tried this or had good results doing so? Thanks, tired of the dry verm filter!

Drinking glasses are often better than pfjars ,if you like large cakes (2 layers alufoil on top, take 1 off to innoc, place back on... use a dry verm layer still , gives bigger fruits)

but most people swear by half pint jars ,they colonize faster, thats whats recommended

I like larger cakes though...

get some Red RTV for the injection ports.... remember to clean the lid before adding it so it adheres good...
you can also use any type of silicone instead, as long as its high temp, much silicone canwithstand 120-300C  and is cheap

always use a glovebox for successful innoculations, even though its tempting not to
I had a lot ofjars ruined by Trich..... always using glovebox now
(or still air box as it is...)

cross sterilize needle redhot between jars

never shake/move pfjars after innoc, it disturbs the dry verm layer and introduces contams often , if you have to touch them touch them gentle...

for injection port I would recommend just 1 port in the middle, and 1 piece of micropore tape for breather hole...
you can punch them with a screwdriver if you are lazy.. works fine, drilling is best
1 port is better than 4 ports IMO, because you only have to innoc once , reduces chances of contam, is easier, you use less spores too etc.

disadvantage is it is much slower colonization... but if you can wait 1 month for your jar, it is fine
I much perfer it, except when I need to test a syringe out on a jar (but there I ccan just inject towards the sides still and see results within 14 days)

with 4 holes in the sides of the lid you can see results within 1-2 weeks or so with LC - it's just extra work if you got many jars to innoc 4x per jar vs 1x

1 innoc port in center of jar, 1 breather hole next to it with a piece from a foam sponge put in,or micropore tape/bandaid , either works fine

(you still cookwith alufoil over the jar to avoid water faling into the filter and ruining moisture ratio... and only take off alufoil in the glovebox too innoc)

I currently have jars colonizing, one of which has tyvek covering a hole in the middle and a self healing injection port next to it. I ran out of lids and used one from an lc jar.

Surprisingly or not, growth seems to be faster than the other jars. It's also more pronounced. I'm wondering if it's the extra GE?

It was not a controlled experiment, so it could be many factors.

But so far I like it. In the end, you save on material costs. AND you can get an extra 1/2" of substrate in the jar.

I'm tired of the standard because I realized I was getting moisture on the underside of the lid after pcing. Also seems to plug up my syringe about half the time, resulting in me shooting 2 cc's into one inoculation point. just running 10 jars as an experiment, we'll see what happens. Thanks for reading

Moisture getting messed up after cooking is because you don't put alufoil over your jars / don't tighten it right around the jars
or your jars being in the water

that will ruin the moisture ratio in the jars
the jars will feel heavier after PCing too, due to the water fro mthe top of the PC falling down into them through the filter

with alufoil over it doesn't happen
make sure jars are not touching the water... you want the steam to sterilize them not the water...

Good luck, sir or madam. I don't have any knowledge of tyvek holding out water under 15 psi. You may still need the foil. Someone else I'm sure could answer that.

Yeah I always double foil wrap my jars tightly, use the trivet, PC for 60-75 minutes, and remove after 4-6 hours of cooling. It seems to me that with a tyvek filter instead of a verm filter it may be easier for the jars to breathe, so to speak? I dunno, lets see how she goes.

Plugged syringe is normal with pftek

Retract the syringe a bit, then it unplugs and you can inject small amounts easily

I would recommend cooking with lids a bit lose and tightening after PC has cooled overnight, so they don't suck out the contents of the syringe (due to vacuum)
