Moringa oleifera- The tree for life. * 2
    #18807983 - 09/06/13 04:09 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

It is with great pleasure to introduce to you my Moringa oleifera and seeds.

This is one of those trees whose plants and seed are very nutritious for you.

Quote:

Moringa leaves prevent 300 diseases.

2 times the protein of yogurt

7 Times the vitamin c of orange

3 times the potassium of bananas

4 times the vitamin A of carrots

4 times the calcium of milk

Rare for a plant source, Moringa leaves contain all the essential amino acids(proteins) to build strong and healthy bodies.

Its like growing multivitamins at your doorstep.

Anybody have experience with this wonderful plant? I cant wait to start harvesting.

Imgoing totally orhanic on this.

A questionn can it be organic if I got other plants around that aren't?

This tree grows VERY robust and can grow more than 10 feet a year. You will need to maintain the tree in order for it to not overtake your backyard.

Do you have any idea of the things they are allowed to spray on plants and still call them organic, I'd recommend looking into it.

I would consider your plant organic as long as its not been directly treated or fertilized with any synthetic items.
Use compost as fertilizer.

Irie,
I'm the "Baron" for moringa round here!!!
I sell the trees & powdered leaf out of my cafe.
I try to sell them at a minimal cost, so as to get it in to the hands of the less fortunate.
Indeed if everyone had a tree in their back-yard, diabetes & other issues would decrease.
When  harvesting the leaves, try not to do too much.
When the fresh leaves are heaped up, the amount of bio-heat(?) will cook the leaves and make them mold! Rendering them useless.
Best way is in a large cardboard box, turning often, till crush dried.
Then shake & crush through a sieve, to powder.
The seeds are really nice to eat also....being sold in some islands as a natural viagra!!!
Flowers are great too fresh but also when sauteed taste similar to mushrooms.
Really easy to grow, no need for extra ferts, imho.
Respect,
Z

Funny, I had never heard of it until now either.  Thank you for bringing it to my attention, it definitely warrants further investigation.  I made a small donation from us here at the Shroomery.  It's not very much, but I feel like it could still make a difference to someone.

here it is today plus 6 sprouts while I was at work. 6 sprouts in there and 1 eggplant seedling.

now I want to go totally organic for these. how do I go about that. the live on the vendore sent has only received rain water and the seeds were soaked in tap water but were put atop rain water soaked peat pellets. I bought a bale of peat moss and I have perlite.

anything else I can add to the mix maybe dolomite, blood and/or bone meal? is tap water okay to use. I can use raine water as its been pouring because of the hurricane in the gulf?

all help is appreciated.

Moringa (or better known as drumstick in South Asia) isn't just nutritious, but also delicious! (apparently) My sister-in-law is from India, her family had a couple trees in their backyard back in India, apparently the powdered leaves make a great spice/condiment, and the fresh unripe pods are super delicious and refreshing, you can buy them frozen or fresh from any good Indian grocer. My Indian relatives were fucking ecstatic when I told them I was growing it, but they've got sticky fingers, so I had to lay the ground rules firmly ha.

Moringa can handle a lot when established apparently, but the herbacious nature of the seedlings make them prone to a lot of problems; one MAJOR problem I've had is planthoppers which go completely mental on the young juicy plants, the scurvy scheisters tap into the phloem and xylem and destroy the vascular system vessel by vessel. The mature plants can also handle freezing point apparently, but loose their leaves back to wood when average temps get down to ~10C (~50F), seeing as seedlings have no wood, they will die completely. Keep 'em indoors for a year or so, if it gets that cold.

that's awesome.

the ebay vendor  claims it to be the pkm-1 hybrid. super pest and drought tolerant but who the hell knows.

anyways if anyone has tip to garden it organically all is appreciated.

no problem my people.

my plan is to grow them to flowering size and then I will harvest the seeds to send them out to whoever wants them on here.

it would be  damn shame to hve such a wonderful tree and not share it with anyone.

they have a kind of peanut taste to them almost....and the branches can be harvested and stripped of leaves once the tree gets big enough...

not only does it heal people, but it also buffs up the soil which it grows in...gotta love the legumes!

Yeah we sell them at my work. I've also seen powdered leaf sold in a Filipino restaurant. I've been thinking of getting one. Apparently the leaves and powder are mucilaginous kinda like okra and can be used as a thickening agent for stews and stuff.
