Awesome gift ideas....??~~ Title change.... Cutting boards and general woodworking thread 2
#18807744 - 09/06/13 02:55 PM (10 years, 4 months ago) |
|
|

EDIT...since I suppose I made this thread evolve in to a cutting board thread, I may as well post them in the OP

Hey Shroomery.
I am hoping to get some ideas for awesome birthday / Christmas gifts.
I'd like it to be something you cannot find on shelves at a store.
For example, I made my girlfriend a picture at Burning Man and had it put on to a framed canvas. I had people help spell her name with their bodies in front of cool scenery and then went and got it put on an 11x14 canvas.
What else is a really cool and thoughtful gift idea for special people?
Thanks.

Yeah... Quality fucking post.
Sort of the wrong thread for feeble attempts at being funny, but whatever.
Anything else?

You could make a frame pertaining to something/somewhere you'd like to do/go in the future. Or off the same idea- say get her goggles and month-by-month more stuff hinting towards the hot-air balloon ride you two are gonna take.'
I'm bad at this stuff, though, and as bad as I am at coming up with ideas, I'm even worse at applying them Hope it helped a little

I think the best gifts always show you know a person well. Like my boyfriend got be a book on neuroscience, among a few other things, for one birthday which was incredibly interesting and useful. Another great aspect of a gift is something that you can do together that also shows you know their interests like one Christmas my boyfriend got me the LEGO Harry Potter game which we played co-op on acid which stands out as one of my best trips.
Cool idea with the picture, shLong!

the best gifts are always from the heart, and i feel like they are best given whenever the mood strikes you, and not necessarily on a birthday or holiday. my boyfriend just gave me the best gift ever - he wrote the author of my favorite novel and got him to sign all the books of his i had in my collection. It didn't cost much at all, but that was the most thoughtful and magnificent gift anyone has ever given me.

I had an ex who was obsessed with wolves.....I got him a dehydrated wolf heart. He was shocked and appalled. That same afternoon my dog ate it. Bad gift idea on my part.
Pics/collages/photo albums are awesome gifts. I say for xmas you get an album an fill it with a few choice pics an be like "i know theres not much in it now but we got plenty of time to fill it up".
As for food I can give you a rose water chocolate recipe thats out of this damn worl. Or an orange zest and cinnamon pancake recipe thats damn good too.
Another good gift idea is setting up an adventure for the day an taken the person out some place badass an making the experience the gift.
And if your really wanting to knock said persons socks off you could always devise and plan an EPIC scavenger hunt round town for them.
Buying the naming rights to a star thats visible in our hemisphere is kinda cool too.
Or adopting an animal in their name for a year or monthly you get pics an updates on the well being of the critter.
I had an ex that made a karaoke video of him singing a song to me. It was the cures love song lol. He had no singing voice and knew it but still rocked it. Made me laugh my balls off.
Thats all I got off the top of my head its time for breaking bad!!!!!!

Here you go you can find a specific pet to help fund with food supplies and medical costs
They send a pic of the pet an mail out updates an if it finds a home before your funding is up you can pick another animal for the money to go towards. 60$ for 6 months 120$ for 12.

Also if said person was an 80's baby or is real into 80's stuff and is a reader get them the book ready player one by ernest clines. Just finished it. Was awesome. (Awesome not fucking weird like john dies at the end.)
Heres the description....
It's the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.
And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune--and remarkable power--to whoever can unlock them.
For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday's riddles are based in the pop culture he loved--that of the late twentieth century. And for years, millions have found in this quest another means of escape, retreating into happy, obsessive study of Halliday's icons. Like many of his contemporaries, Wade is as comfortable debating the finer points of John Hughes's oeuvre, playing Pac-Man, or reciting Devo lyrics as he is scrounging power to run his OASIS rig. And then Wade stumbles upon the first puzzle. Suddenly the whole world is watching, and thousands of competitors join the hunt--among them certain powerful players who are willing to commit very real murder to beat Wade to this prize.
Now the only way for Wade to survive and preserve everything he knows is to win. But to do so, he may have to leave behind his oh-so-perfect virtual existence and face up to life--and love--in the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.
A world at stake.
A quest for the ultimate prize.
Are you ready?
Book was so sick!!!!

It's walnut and cherry for the body, oak eyes and walnut pupils...
Glued it up with Titebond3 glue, drew a program on the computer for a CNC router, recessed holes for the eyes using a . 250 inside offset with a half inch cutter. Did the opposite for the eyes (.250 outside offset). Glued the eyes, hammered them in and used the same cutter to drill holes in the eyes and then inserted 1/2 inch walnut dowels for the pupils, sanded them smooth, sanded everything smooth, finished with mineral oil to protect it...

Shit... With access to a lathe you have a ton of possibilities...
You can actually make more with that than you can with a router. (including cutting boards if you're feeling saucy). Use 1" cubes or something, glue em together all baller - like, make a big dumbass beautiful bowl or something.Plate, cutting board, bat, shit... Almost anything with symmetry.

how did you get the pieces of wood like that? buy them locally? or did you cut them into strips yourself?

They come in long boards (at work) and then are cut to length and then in to the strip you see on a rip saw (remember my baller machinery comment?) I'm working on a few more now... Will post pics for you tonight....

OP, you could take her grandmother's ashes, send it to Europe, pay 28k and have the ashes made into a diamond that you put on a ring.
Mixed reactions are to be expected.
Most likely gonna end up in an awkward blowjob.

Every decent piece I've ever made has been posted in this thread, so this type of work at least is fairly new to me as of this week... I have a background in woodworking, but nothing like that.
But anyhow, I've come to notice I really enjoy making things as presents. The blanket was just fleece cost and scissors, then tie it all together... The card I improvised.
I just need shit to keep my mind occupied otherwise I stress dumb shit, so I find all this therapeutic, hence why I bumped the thread... Hoping to reach people before Christmas so they may be inspired to make their own cheap gifts and shit...

I think it means more when you put in the time and effort to make something yourself.. That being said I don't ever feel like doing that myself. I just find gifts that are thoughtful even though not so much as something I did personally.

Just a jpg or other common file type... Bitmap would work, too...
Would need to be drawn in black with clean lines, and somewhat bulbous ( because most shroom shapes won't make a good cuttingboard.)
I'm not sure exactly what my program (BobArt) can import at the time being.
That'd be sweet if you could

Looking forward to it! I just traced the shroomery logo image using splines. easy to do with any picture.
Using vector geometry lets you resize without any loss in resolution though.

So... I'd like to try a different approach to the mushroom cutting board...
I cannot draw or anything, so I need your help again... (Johnny?)
I need a bulbous mushroom drawn digitally in black and white with clean, non pixilated lines.
The issue is that mushrooms don't have a shape condusive to cutting boards. I'll need one that has a fat cap, and a short fat stem, with the stem being almost as wide as the cap. (you know, so it can work as a proper cutting board.)
And, to make it look cooler, I was thinking of using 2 different wood combos for the cap and stem, so the bottom of the cap will need to be a near perfectly straight line so the cap wood doesn't go in to the stem and vice versa.....
Anybody care to assist me in making that drawing? If someone had the skills needed it should only take a few minutes, but I don't have the software or the talent...
Thanks

Awesome! Nice finds! I think a Single Mario shroom would work, as long as the bottom of the cap was flat...(meaning the orientation angle would just have to be adjusted so you're not looking at it from above). Also, if I use the Mario shroom, could you leave the eyes in and I can see whether I can inlay them.
Also, the one under the Mario shroom would also work if the stem was about 25-50% fatter....
I can use really any shape, it's just that the functionality of the cutting board would decline... y'know?

with the red being Walnut and then try to inlay all the white in Oak...
That could be pretty fucking epic, no?

Here are the two I have going now. They look rough still, but once they're sanded and oiled I think they'll turn outnicely... And the one needs to let the two glue joints dry and then I'm gonna glue those both together...
The 1st pic are the boards that made the one in the middle. . Just that it was taken before I started cutting it up...

If I were to make them for sale, how much do you think would be a fair asking price for those? I know the owl would be the most because it was a shitload of work, but do you guys have any clue about cutting board prices or what I could get for those?

Cool... Thanks for all the kind words and help, bud. I really appreciate everything. What's fucked up is that the wood alone in each board is close to $10 worth if you were to buy it not in bulk. We get semi loads, so it's not that much for me, but you know what I'm saying...
I personally don't think id spend more than 25 on a cutting board.... But knowing how much the wood cost andhow long they each take to make I would say, for me, that I wouldn't sell them for less than $50. Not that I think they're worth 50,but the work involved and wood cost would equate to about $10 hour when it'sall said and done with if tthey sold for 30-40...
I suppose I could make some, list them high and see what happens But yeah, you have to be a baller to shell out 35+ for a cutting board in my opinion...

You gotta have a site like carpenter ripoffartist and make fake comments showing how lifechanging these cutting boards are.

I tried selling those custom acrylic pieces but at the end of the day it just wasn't worth my time.
It was 15$ in materials, 2 hours design and program, and 3 hours on the mill for something people were only willing to pay 25-30$ for.
in the end I just do it for gifts or personal.

I am a tool and die maker. I make aluminum molds for plastic parts. Mostly small stuff (smaller than 20" diameter)but for all types of industries.
I also do Cad design in solidworks and cnc programming on mastercam.
I have a manual lathe, bridgeport manual mill, and EDM sinker machine. For the CNC I use a 3 axis with a decent table travel.

Similar cutting boards seem to be priced anywhere from 50 to 150, but honestly I like yours better than most of the ones I'm seeing on there. I know someone local who makes them for around $200 a piece and they're very close in design to yours. He has an etsy account and one lady buys almost all of his boards. He told me he's sold over a dozen to this one lady alone. People collect them or give them as gifts if they like them enough.
Great gift idea btw man, I'd be psyched to be gifted one of those by someone.

You make me miss Jr High and Woodshop Maybe someday I'll be able to put together my own little shop and get back to woodworking.
I like your work.

I know a place to get tghings you can only find there. Even if you look everywhere in the world you won't find it except here. Its a very special place but people rarely hear about it. Sometimes a friend might whisper a few words indicating its location but that is all.
You need something that you can see yourself in, you want something that you can say "this is for me". You want it to be apart o you, to look at it and know that you recognize so mucvh about it inside yourself.
I know a man who has a gift right now. He has it inside his bag & he won't hesitate to show it to you. He might wnat to show it to all of your friend as well. For he might have to run on thedesire to reveal it to you on spur of the moment as if unable to prevent the massive urge associated with bestowing it to you coming over him & making he nearly throw the gift upon you.
He says noone can see his gift. Only some people can even ge permission to look at it. For he will put it in the backscloset for people can't see it.
And they were planning on giving this gift to someone else other than who they sent it to first.
Apparently the gift was first in the hands of an entirely different person before. He did not mean for the person to receive somethign not for him.
The idea I have for a gift would be to give her a santa toy or perhaps a toy car collection. For three years ago I recall I presented my cousin with a toy and he was genuinely happy. I've never seen someone so happy from a present, he revealed such an immense joy from being given toys he never deserved that he burst into a flame of joy. he literally was the happiest person in the entire world I believe. Noone could say they even came close to how happy he was, and if you did you would be lying dead on. For he was so happy that he made every room he entered appear to shine luminously as if by magic.

Thank you... I'm still unsure which I like the best, though. I wish I would've waited and made the owl a checkerboard pattern or something... They're all wrapped up and waiting for xmas.
I think I'm gonna keep making them and see if I can sell on etsy. (after I make my mushroom one, of course. I'm excited about that one. Any tips or recommendations about the color scheme to use with that mushroom drawing that was posted?
I was thinking dark overall, and inlaying the lighter oak in the spots on the cap and inlaying the face with the same and then using the dark walnut again to inlay the eyes.
Any other ideas?

If I was gonna do it, I'd do the stem and circles with some kind of really light wood and do the cap in cherry or cedar or something like that..
I can't wait to see the results either way though..

Yeah I was thinking along the same lines. maple for the stem and dots, then a cherry for the cap and a walnut for the eyes. but either way, you obviously know what youre doing, all your stuff looks fantastic!
I might post a couple of the gifts i made on the lathe this year later (not to derail or anything, just a mutual appreciation of woodworking)

The lightest wood Ive been using has been oak, and the darkest has been walnut. The cherry oils out to look a lot like the oak, IMO..and I don't have much access to other woods (like cedar, plus that's a soft wood, not good for cutting boards), just mostly oak, Walnut, and a little cherry access The pic here displays sort of what I am talking about...The bulk of it is Oak and Walnut, and the circle in the middle is Cherry

This is sort of a vauge idea of what I was thinking...

I could go and buy some raw hardwood boards from the store, but their prices are so outrageous... I'd like to try to stick to O, W,& C, but what else could I look in to for extremely light wood do you think? I have Menards, Home Depot, and Lowes nearby

You could, but I think the question would be how long would it last, especially something like a cutting board.. Well assuming they're actually going to be used and not just serve as decorative pieces.

If you could dye wood, it'd stain in to the wood, so I'd think it'd last indefinitely... I think it'd be more a matter of how long would the wood take to dry back to 6-10 percent so you could use it again.
I think maybe I'll try to dye some oak with food coloring, vinegar, and acetone. Can't hurt to try.. If that works that opens a whole new level of fun.

Well the oak would work as a replacement for maple. im just not very familiar with oak and the only times i worked with it i had bad experiences, but that was straight from a tree, so its probably different.
As far as coloring the wood, interesting idea coloring it in that way. Ive only really ever used walnut oil to add some color. Although one time i bleached some wood. just came out funky, i dont really recommend it without some serious testing. And i should to around to posting those 3 bowls sometime early tomorrow unless i sleep in and get too busy. still gotta wrap two of them and let one get unwrapped.
Merry Christmas guys

Seems like the way you mentioned is the way to go.
What finish did you put on your pieces anyhow? I always struggle with the idea of a durable foodsafe finish, which you would most certainly need for a cuttingboard

All made out of bradford pear. the middle was finished with walnut oil, while the other two only with a mix of carnauba and bees wax. while on the last one the pith was dug out and replaced with some crushed rock (maybe granite) in the shape of a heart, or so i tried to do.

About a year and a half, but being off at school, ive only had a limited amount of time to do it. Although i do put a lot of hours in when i do turn. prolly had about ~5 months of time when i could actually work.
Never to late to pick up a new craft! if you have enough money to get a lathe and some tools, i would definitely suggest trying it out

I appreciate it. I was thinking I'd start off trying my hand at small things like ashtrays, hinged boxes, or maybe even some abstract art that I could hang on my wall. I saw this online and thought it'd be really cool to put up in my living room:

well as far as lathing here -> http://s473.photobucket.com/user/MrApple2437/library/?sort=3&page=1 are some pictures of things i've made, you can check out my user gallery, and you can always check out this -> http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/18248127 thread for things that mad machinist and i have both made. hinged boxes and that abstract art aren't really things that would be made on a lathe (although not impossible) and schLong would know better on that avenue.

Thanks again for the tips. I'll keep in touch with you and/or shLong if I have any more questions.
I have to get going for tonight tho.
Edit: I just read the post where you said you made some pieces with Machinist. Ask him if he ever got the computer to work that I sent him. I haven't heard from him in a pretty long time.

dude, schLong, your cutting boards are way better than my things. They look very professional. but i appreciate the compliment. It is pretty easy to get decent at lathing i think so i mean you could always try to pick it up.
Generally when i make something it is the first time im making it since I only have so much time to make things and I like the variety of it. Although In the past i made ~10 rings and over thanksgiving break I made 4 ashtrays (which i have no pictures of ) But lately i've been making bowl like items as seen above. each a bit different, since my wood is way too wet to make any boxes so i was kinda driven to the larger figures that can warp a little when they dry without impacting the functionality

These are beautiful - truly a work of art. You should definitely sell them as there are plenty of people who would pay upwards of $50 for a handmade cutting board. Make your own etsy account and start at $75 and see what happens. You can always come down in price if they aren't selling.

Alright. I have all my materials ready to start this little project except the actual wood.
I just had a few questions. -Which type of wood would you recommend that's easy to work with and relatively cheap? -By router, do you mean a Dremel tool of sorts? -Once I have the box and lid ready, what product(s) do I use to give it a shiny finish as well as make resistant to absorbing water?

This is a router. It's what gives beveled edges and such, you just buy different bits for different decorative designs.

Thanks, I gotcha. Looks like the tip of it is basically a Dremel bit. I'm not going to go out and buy a power tool that big and expensive to just experiment with a new hobby. That's why I was wondering if a Dremel would work...?

Dremel does make router bits.. I'm not sure how well it performs as one though, and I wasn't telling you to go out and buy the tool, just answer the question on what it is.

For the wood.... Pine is cheap and soft and easy to work with. Oak is nice, but a little pricey and hard wood. Same with walnut and maple.
For the router discussion... You could make the box and then use your tool to do etchings instead of a routed edge. So you could just make a straightforward box and then use your artistic abilities with the dremel to add some serious pizazz to it For the finish... There are a ton of options. May be best to Google it and read replies on a woodworking forum. I'd say a stain and laquor.

Awesome! Thanks for all the advice shLong.
I'll post some pictures as I go along the process. From what I've been reading, even though oak is a bit more expensive, it looks so much more beautiful. I have a table saw so the hardness of it wouldn't be a big factor in cutting it compared to pine since I don't have to use a hand saw. Thanks again.

For sure shLong. I'll start posting some pictures on this thread as soon as I get started.
I'm still looking on the web for different finishes. I didn't realize there are so many ways to go about it. I've researched a bit on Linseed and Tung oil, as well as Varnish. I'm completely new to this so I'm trying to educate myself on the pros and cons of each one.
I saw you post that you used beeswax on that bowl right? It looked really nice. I want a finish that's not overly shiny. Just a nice matte finish that makes the wood look as natural as possible. Would the beeswax do that?
As far as what I'm putting in it, it's just going to be a little box to keep a couple pipes, papers, and maybe a sectioned off compartment to hold a small bud jar. Basically a little stoner's toolbox lol. So I'm thinking the base will be around 12"x6" or so.

my favorite finish is a 1/3 carnauba wax and 2/3 beeswax mixture.
Another one i like is briwax. I dont particulararly care for varnishes and i have never used the tung oil or linseed oil., I've only used mineral oil, walnut oil, and then the other things i mentioned.

That's interesting. Carnauba wax is the same type of of wax that I use to wax my car. So that with the beeswax is the mixture you used for the bowl in your pictures?

Right on. That's exactly what I'm looking for. A nice matte finish that really just shows the natural patterns and color of the wood.

Yeah, the carnauba/bees wax combo comes out a bit shiny, It makes the wood look very clean almost marble like. I mix the waxes because the carnauba wax is a very hard but brittle wax with a high melting temp, and the bees wax is a bit more malleable and easier to apply. So mixing the two keeps some of the strength of carnauba, but the beeswax keeps the melting temp down and gives more work-ability. And when i mix them, make sure to use more bees than carnauba because the carnauba retains its properties more than the bees. Also keep in mind that adding this mix or either wax would not dye the wood to bring out the grain. If applied by itself then it will simply show the grain that is already there and not change the coloring of the wood at all. This is also all foodsafe
The briwax, walnut oil, and mineral oil are probably more up your alley as far as the matte goes. The briwax is a premade wax that is not food safe, but the mixture must have some mineral oil or something in it because unlike the waxes above, it does sorta stain the wood a little bit when applied. It will bring out the grain a bit and end up a nice low key finish. The walnut oil, which is foodsafe, is a naturally drying oil so when applied it will eventually act while it also darkens the wood a little bit. the brand of oil i use (mahoneys mahogany walnut oil i think) dries and strengthens the wood a little when doing so. The mineral oil, also foodsafe and what schLong uses on his cutting boards, is an oil that does not dry naturally, so this finish would need to be reapplied more than the other finishes mentioned. When applied wit will seep into the grain and bring out the colors of the wood already visible without darkening (other than what wetting the wood would do), but the surface mineral oil can be wiped or washed away so reapplying mineral oil periodically keeps the wood protected.
Just my two cents and what ive learned through use and google

Thank you for all the information Bambi. You rock!
I just found a place online that's a couple miles from my house that just specializes in woodworking. About to go by the wood I need. I'm still undecided between oak and walnut. I was looking at walnut last night, and it looks really beautiful. Can't wait to get started on this when I get back home.

Alright. I was just looking at pictures last night, and it looked nice. I'll go with the "North American White Oak" I believe it was called. It looked a little bit too light colored for my preference in the pictures, but I guess since it'll darken with the finish it should be perfect.

Should I buy a wood glue? If so, is there a brand that you suggest? Or should I just put it together using a drill and wood-screws?

As far as me selling on etsy, I don't think so. I looked on there and they have some fucking beautiful work for super cheap (imo)... I did see one for 500 and even though I would never spend that sort of money on wood, it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

Something to keep in mind with etsy. It's all about who you know and where you advertise. Price doesn't come into the equation as much as you might think. Also, say you put some stuff up on there and linked to it here, or let people know where to find it or whatever, people would be following your link to buy a board from you, not because they're necessarily looking for just any old cutting board, ya know? Some people are willing to spend the extra cash to know it comes from someone they know, and knows the work and love that went into it.
I would buy one for sure if you got an etsy account up and going. Or trade you some of my glasswork if you would be down for that.

And I'm pleased with the shroom progress so far. What's nice is that once I get the program written up then I can get the shaped ones out a lot quicker.. Having trouble with all the inlays at the moment, but I think I can make it work.
I have a 1 inch thick walnut blank waiting to be the mushroom. Do y'all think I should keep it like it is with the oak inlay, or should I perhaps make some combo of striped wood or something for the inlays?

I'd say you seem to have an eye for what looks good, so do what comes naturally. Even if it's not something you like particularly, there's a good chance someone else will love it.

Here's a new brick and mortar type one that I made an is currently for sale, and one that is still in progress that is going to a Shroomerite's boyfriend's mother. Over 335 pieces, currently an inch and a half thick, will be sanded down to probably 1 1/4.gonna add a handle, too. All proceeds to benefit my Burning Man fund

Hey.. Thanks, bud. Appreciate it! "business "is going very well. Technically sold my 1st board the other day to my aunt (the one next to the owl in that pic), sold the owl, but has another board to go along with it before I get the $... A shroomerites boyfriend contacted me for two, and made an extremely generous offer that I had to turn down because it was way too high.. So, I knocked 33 percent off the offer and have 2 coming to him... Then I have a Wisconsin shaped one to make for a friend and a few others to make through people contacting me on Facebook for one..
So, currently, business is booming
