fascinating properties of light
    #18807366 - 09/06/13 12:47 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Is anyone else fascinated by the properties of light??

I think it's really cool, like how its quantized into photons and these photons can go on practically infinetely because in theory, as you approach the speed of light time slows so it doesn't get weaker as it travels. It doesn't need matter to travel through and can pass through matter, yet it can also push matter. Is light itself even material (how do photons compare to atoms or electrons/protons? there's a lot I still don't understand about it, but I find it incredibly interesting.

did I get anything wrong? What other cool things are there to know about light? Anyone else share this fascination?

Speaking of the speed of light, have you seen Stephen Hawking's theory on time travel?  He says the only way would be to get something that moves that fast, but nothing really can.  It all makes sense the way he explains it.

Light can be described as both a wave or a particle, but not both at the same time:thumbup:

I will learn more in detail next semester

Speak of the devil I have class in a hour.. biophysics. first half is all quantum mechanics. Schroeder equation, Heisenberg uncertainty principle. It's fucking crazy shit.. particle or wave can't tell. can't know direction and momentum at the same time... I actually watched Leonard susskinds quantum entanglement lecture 1 yesterday and that shit was just insane.

and sadly i need to spend all next week studying for the first test come next friday!! gonna be a hard fucking class!

Ah. Heisenberg uncertainty principle.

It's impossible to know the exact kinetic energy of a wave while also knowing the placement of it in space. Either or...similar concept with quantum theory and how it views light.

Also, there are lots of reactions going on that we can't see. There is an incomprehensible number of neutrinos and muons passing through us every second, all because of the sun's invisible radiation. They reach speeds close to the speed of light, making their half lives much longer as they are red shifted through an incredible velocity.

I got confused quite a bit with concepts of physics. However, I took that as....CHALLENGE ACCEPTED

I find it interesting that the particles that make up light, are traveling at the speed of light but as we know the close you get to the speed of light time slows down therefore the particles that make up light don't experience the passage of time :yasmokinyet:

The entirety of the universe is experienced in an instant to a particle!

Light itself is probably the only way we'll figure out how to travel at almost the speed of light.

In space if you open a wide enough parachute, light can push it. So technically if you build a huge heat resistant parachute and place it as close to the sun possible it would be pushed by enormous amounts of light. If you put a shuttle behind it, it could tow it through space. Hopefully the parachute would get enough momentum by the light to reach great speeds before the sun is to far away. Since theirs no resistance in space, that speed would be constant.

OR

Everything I just said is completely false and stupid

Here's a question: can light create propulsion? Like you would a jet engine?

You can fill a sail with wind like you can use a solar sail for catching light. can you do the reverse like use a fan to create propulsion but with light?

Yeah the reason none of it makes sense is because evolution didn't need us to know the smallest fabrics of existence just the bigger shit..

If you watch that quantum entanglement everything can be explained as bits and matrices "not like the movie" actual math matrices.. in quantum that is

as for time.. time needs to upload.. if you have a coin it could either be heads or tails. if you flip it and it lands on tails then time has to upload to show that it is tails. its fucking weird but this is what is taught in the lecture..

also this is interesting

this is suppose to show time flow..

check this diagram and follow the arrows from , bottom left dot --> top left --> top right --> bottom right ---> and then to top left again

as you can see their is no way to tell if the top left dot originated from the bottom left or bottom right.. ahh its hard to explain u need to watch the hour and half long lecture..

watched the Veritasium vid, kinda funny cause it was veritasium and vsauce that got me thinking about all the cool properties of light in the first place.

To be honest, it still doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me afterwards, maybe I'll have to find a book or something more indepth on it.

check this out. photons exist as the fastest speed there is. all other speeds are measured relative to it. what is speed? time. speed = time. a photon traveling at its normal pace (the speed of light) will have reached its destination the EXACT SAME INSTANT it left. departure and arrival happen at the same instant for a photon, no matter where it's traveling. to us, light may seem to travel for thousands and thousands of years even. but from the perspective of the light that's traveling that speed, time is not passing. all points exist simultaneously, all points in space and time, are here and now, when you are light

locality is not an issue if you're a photon. since no time passes, you basically exist as a reference-point for everything else that's ever happened in reference to light. so basically matter is just light energy condensed to a slower vibration, this is when time is created and things undergo process. time means process. time is a property of things which undergo process (matter and chemicals). process means waiting. light need not wait, because light is beyond time. what the hell do you have to wait for anyway, when you're traveling at the speed of light?

I love light. I am studying photonic (and electronic) materials in university so I know quite a lot about it. But I am a bit too alcoholed to accurately discuss such a complicated topic. So instead I'll just post Light by Phish. Damn good jam in this one.
