Bacon and eggs every morning! Call the doctor?
#18807140 - 09/06/13 11:52 AM (10 years, 4 months ago) |

So have had some friends and family express concern for me eating bacon and eggs every morning. It started about 5 years ago when i started keeping chickens and getting fresh eggs daily. I think it is a perfectly well balanced meal. Gets me through almost all the day if i absolutely need to skip lunch.
I am 31 years old, weigh 180lbs and am just under six feet tall. I checked my blood pressure recently and it was 125/86
I hear this is actually good. I also hear that i could have high cholesterol and good blood pressure however. Should i be concerned?

Go get your cholesterol checked, that's pretty much the only possible issue. How many eggs a day and how are you cooking them? I'd cut out the bacon before the eggs.

You should be fine as long as you don't eat like 5 or more strips each time, go get your cholesterol checked if you feel the need to
The one and only time I ever had mine checked she said it was a bit high, and so I went home and ate a plate of bacon with my wife cuz that was all the food we had to eat at the time

I heard on the news a few weeks ago that "studies" showed it's safe for you to eat ONE PIECE of bacon a day, any more than that is apparently bad for you.
i eat eggs and bacon all the time, but i also exercise a lot.

I am usually eating two pieces of bacon and two eggs cooked over easy. Also i always have some hasbrowns on the side as well. Trying lately to have some 12 grain toast as well.
Maybe i should cut it back to one piece of bacon.

I'm not too concerned about animal fats, but I stay the fuck away from margarine and other hydrogenated shit. Bacon does have a lot of salt though. I generally only eat a lot of salt when I'm sweating and drinking a lot of water, so I think it evens out.

It's all bullshit people have been eating fucking eggs and bacon since we were hunters and gatherers.
Yes, it has cholesterol but the high protein content in a study shows that it is beneficial. It's shown that skipping breakfast is way worse then consuming eggs a lot.
--- Although I eat eggs a lot due to the fact they are cheap and high in protein and ever since I was little my grandparents spoon fed me scrammbie eggs almost every morning. It's like a reminder of youth to me lol.. Most of the time though I use one whole egg, then crack 2 more and remove the two yokes.
It is all part of a balanced DIET! If your eating eggs all fucking day then that's bad. I usually eat really high protein early in the morning then veggie/dairy/fish/grains the rest of the day.. plus wheat grass
Quote:
Consumption of whole eggs can be a part of a heart healthy diet, even in those with existing coronary heart disease, a new study has found.
Research from Yale University explored the impact of daily whole egg consumption in men and women with coronary heart disease.
The subjects were randomized to consume either two eggs, half a cup of egg substitute or a high-carbohydrate breakfast for six weeks as part of their typical diet.
The subjects who ate either whole eggs or egg substitute did not experience any negative impact in total cholesterol, blood pressure, body weight or endothelial function.
Research from the University of Connecticut suggested that daily whole egg consumption may have a positive effect on the function and composition of HDL cholesterol in adults with metabolic syndrome.
Subjects followed a carbohydrate-restricted diet, and consumed either three eggs per day or an equivalent amount of egg substitutes.
After 12 weeks, subjects consuming whole eggs experienced improvements in HDL (good cholesterol) composition and ability to remove cholesterol from the blood
Those eating three whole eggs daily also had HDL that was lower in triacylglycerol and higher in a beneficial component of egg yolks (phosphatidylethanolaime)(2).
“Taken together with previously established benefits of egg intake on HDL profiles, these findings further support the notion that eggs serve as a functional food to reduce cardiovascular disease risk in individuals with metabolic syndrome,” Catherine Andersen, lead study author and PhD candidate at the University of Connecticut said
Researchers at University of Missouri presented data comparing the effects of a normal-protein cereal breakfast (15 percent meal calories), high-protein egg and pork breakfast (40 percent meal calories) and no breakfast on satiety in overweight/obese adolescents who normally skip breakfast(3).
The group that consumed the high protein egg and pork breakfast reported a decrease in hunger and an increase in fullness compared to the normal protein and breakfast-skipping group.
The individuals eating a high protein breakfast also voluntarily reduced their intake by more than 400 calories per day over the 12-week study.
No significant differences were seen in weight between groups; however, breakfast skippers were found to have significant increases in percent body fat mass compared to those who ate the normal and high protein breakfasts.
This study supports the benefits of a high protein breakfast as a weight management strategy among overweight and obese adolescents.

I have actually been trying to go for the uncured bacon. It seems to be the same price per package but the package is for 12oz. not 16oz.
So 25% more money doesn't sound too bad for my health.

I cook my bacon in a small covered pot so that it simmers in the grease. Then I split up the grease between myself and my dogs and cats because I'm a good dad. Usually I'll wrap it (bacon) in a tortilla with roasted and peeled chili peppers and sharp cheddar. Hashbrowns too if I'm making a real meal (which for me is almost always dinner) out of it. I'm not above throwing together a quick BLT or even dicing it before cooking so that I can eat it right out of the pot. Usually when I do that I throw cheese and chiles in there too to help soak up the grease so that I can eat it.
I also like it way chewier/less cooked than most people seem to like it. Why anyone would want to crisp away the deliciousness is beyond me.
Aren't all real (i.e. not beef or turkey) sausages "infused with bacon"?? Or are sausages strictly salvaged from other parts of the pig. A 100% bacon sausage (seasoned traditionally) would be gooodddd

I can think of a lot of things that would do more harm than eating pigs and chickens for breakfast.

Maybe i should cut it back to one piece of bacon.
Eggs are good for you. It's only the bacon you have to worry about. And bread is not particularly good for you, I don't know why you would make an effort to add it into your diet.

Why is bread bad for me? I figure the grains are good for fiber and all. Its not wonderloaf white bread.

Gluten / wheat is generally not very good for you. Wheat metabolizes directly into sugar in the body, it makes you crash just as hard shortly after eating it.
I have an omelette for breakfast pretty much every morning - 3 eggs, onion, bell pepper, and goat cheese. It's delicious.

Just get some bloodwork done at the doctor. You might have high LDL, low HDL.
I wish I could eat bacon and FRESH eggs every day. Fresh eggs are so good. Mmmm, nice hot runny yolk over toast...
