DinoMyc:"Green mold means you did something wrong." Do you mean that he wasn't sterile enough somewhere along the line? Or do you think that the thing that he did wrong is something other than a sterility issue? take care c

Straight verm does work. Just make sure that it stays moist and stays right at the edge of the tray or you may end up with shrooms growing underneath your substrate. The major cause of the green mold IMHO is the acidity of the casings and poor air exchange.------------------ Be sure to check out www.3mshrooms.homestead.com for your spore needs

did you bake the casing material first to sterilize it? It made the difference for me of one flush and 6 flushes before contams. And yes plain vermiculite works well too with much less chance at contams.

Sift your peat moss through a large kitchen strainer. There are a lot of sticks and particulate matter that cannot be easily picked out by hand. I am still fighting problem with cobweb mold on the casing layer myself. I think pasturization as opposed to sterilization might be a good idea. It keeps some of those beneficial bacterial cultures alive that help fight off fungal contamination. The increased fresh air exchanges are a good idea.------------------ When the going gets weird, the weird get wired.
