Adding water to your WBS jars before PCing
    #18806649 - 09/06/13 09:15 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

Anyone else had this idea but afraid to try it?

Well, I finally gave this a go the other day.

Results:

FAILURE. On a derp scale.

Procedure:

My WBS soaked for 24 hours, but when it came time to prep WBS for the PC I got lazy. I had friends over and bottles/blunts were being passed between us... so, to say the least, I wasn't in the mood or minset to properly prepare my WBS for pressure cooking. And I paid heavily for it. :bigjoint:

I was trying to skip the simmering step, so I added water only until it was about an inch up the side of the pint jar. Set foil on jars and to the PC they go.

As soon as they come out of the PC I can tell something is wrong. I made an attempt to shake the jars, but they didn't want any part of it. I could see that the grains which were submersed have all exploded and forced themselves stuck in the bottom of the jar. :foreheadslap: Not only that, but the grains on the top half of the jar are a dark color like roasted almonds and are about half the size they should be after proper grain prep. (meaning they didn't even hold the water from the soak, or lost it during the PC). AKA every jar is useless.

Damnit, at least it's over... all I have to do is dump the jars, right?

If only it were that easy.

After cooling overnight, I went to dump the jars and prep new WBS. The almond colored grains poured right out as usual, but the exploded grains in the bottom of the jars wedged themselves so well that I had to use my hand to reach in and scoop out them out.

First jar, reach in to get a handful of what felt like paste. Seriously, it was disgusting. It stuck to the jars, stuck to my hands, etc. Not to mention my hands are too big to get to the bottom of the jars, so I ended up with a spoon; and yes the WBS paste was stuck on the spoon, too. It was a huge mess.

Whenever I try to take a shortcut, I realize afterward that I'm only cutting myself short on what I could produce if I did it properly the first time.

Learn from my mistakes and don't make the mistake on your own! Not only was it a waste of time, supplies, and effort.. but it was a HUGE pain in the ass trying to clean the WBS paste out of those jars.

:mushroom2: Happy Shrooming :mushroom2:

Yeah if you just want a substrate that you add water to in the jar, try rye grass or the such.
