Yeah, the ground cover looks more like California. If I were just looking at the trees, I might think West Virginia at first, but West Virginia is mostly hardwoods and most of the trees in these shots look like Conifers. I'd say SoCal, if I were going to make an educated guess. Where you from OP?

Banana slugs only live on the west coast as far as I know. OP is most likely in Norcal. Your polypores are some kind of fomitopsis, you could put up a proper ID in MH&I if you want to know the species.

Just was out in the PNW and saw tons of slugs out like those giants he posted, and have never seen slugs like that anywhere back east. Gotta be PNW somewhere.

Zee is on the money! But that's unfair because he knows the area.

Anyway, I looked it up and think they're the tinder polypore, fomes fomentarius, not reishi. You aren't likely to find the true reishi on the west coast anyway, only ganoderma tsugae. G. lucidum grows on hardwood and is common in the east but pretty rare on the west coast, I think the jury is still out whether or not g. tsugae is as good as reishi for medicinal purposes.

I just moved from PA to the PNW. The hunting is better out here. You're probably in a good position to find some chants this year, to say the least.

Do you think I can find them in that forest above?

Only one way to find out. Hunting is mostly trial and error. Some research can help reduce your error, but eventually you've just got to go out and cover some ground. If you've had any recent rain then chances are something's growing out there.
