Is there ANY way to grow cubensis w/o access to an oven?
    #18805560 - 09/05/13 10:30 PM (10 years, 4 months ago)

I just recently got to college and I would like to try growing p. cubensis as the spores are legal here and very easily obtainable.

I've read through many teks and they sound simple enough, the only problem is that in the dorms the only appliances we are allowed are microwaves and as far as I know there isn't a community oven that can be used, let alone one that I could monopolize on for growing mushrooms.

Is there any way around the oven thing? I have an acquaintance in the city that has an apartment and would probably be down for this whole thing, but thats a huge bud ride back and forth and rather impractical.

suggestions?

no need for an oven. just pick up a pressure cooker and you have all the appliances you will ever need. could even do it right within your dorm.

crap I should probably read up on the pressure cooker.

I just read the PF Tek and studied the crap out of that only to remember I don't have oven access.

can someone link me to a Tek that requires a pressure cooker and no oven?

where did you get the oven idea?
For the pf tek you can use a large pot with a lid that fits well to steam your jars.
Just make sure to elevate your jars off the bottom with jar lids or something..

I think what he's saying is no stovetop for heating.

The proctor-silex brand hotplate is surprisingly durable.

this tek has good info on substrate and jar prep, though id use 2.5 verm : 1 water : 1 brf ratio. remember, mix the verm and water before adding the brf!!

http://www.fungifun.org/English/Pftek

dont worry about an incubator, just store the jars somewhere dark and warm for a few weeks.

then build this incredibly simple terrarium:

http://www.shroomology.com/topic/863-shot-gun-fruiting-chamber/

mist and fan, and in a week shrooms should start fruiting.

enjoy!

you best bet would be, and I never thought I would say this, either buy a kit,go to your friends house and do it there, or just buy the jars or bags pre sterilized online.

^Yeah what he said, I don't have any way of boiling or really heating anything for sterilization beyond a lighter for the syringe.

I know nothing about a pressure cooker. If I get a pressure cooker do i still need a hotplate?

yes unless you can afford an AA pressure cooker that plugs in, but it costs an arm and a leg:thumbdown:

pretty much:thumbdown:

your best bet would be to go to your friends house and make the jars or bags yourself. then just do the rest in your dorm:thumbup:

no no no you are completly right in a sense:thumbup:

OP take apart your microwave and make a high energy radio frequency gun(herf gun) I'm willing to bet money it might work. In fact I bet you could sterilize 20 or 30 plus jars in one sitting,as long as there aren't any metal lids:thumbup:

shit I guess it wouldn't matter since it's a crazy idea that will
probably only result in destroying a microwave.

get the pc up to 15psi first, then microwave for 20mins.

I'm talking about using a high energy radio frequency gun made from a microwave to sterilize substrate a large scale. lol not putting a pressure cooker in a microwave, doubt it would fit anyways:shrug:

The how is beyond my knowledge but you're actually not far off from using radiation to sterilize.  Most of the fruits and veggies you get from the grocery stores in the US are radiated to kill bacteria and give us giant tumors.

well we're not allowed to grow mushrooms in our dorms either hahaha.

it's more of the idea that I can easily keep a pressure cooker and hot plate hidden compared to a kitchen stove... Even a camping stove would be too big.

Could I use the hotplate to sterilize the vermicute?

Ive used a hot plate and an 8 quart PC before with success.

It worked well with 1/2 pint PF jars. Not so well with filter patch bags.

Yeah I was serious about the hotplate. I do my work in my basement so instead of running upstairs I use a hotplate. I've used some crappy ones that burn out in about a week like black & decker for instance.
For some odd reason, the proctor-silex one has been PUT THROUGH MY RINGER severely and still keeps kicking.  It's been 8 months of solid abuse.

It does take about an hour with the 23 quart PC but it still gets the job done.
Its best application, like WJ said, is with the small pc. I use those for LC, test jars, syringes, & other small projects. It gets the little PC to temp quick.
I almost gave up on the hotplate concept until I found this brand.
It cost about 15 bucks.

I suggest you wait until you don't live in a dorm before you grow mushrooms.

rohr has the most sound advice. just wait a year. buy mushrooms if needed. once out of the dorms you can explore growing all you want.

if you still feel dedicated to growing though, id buy an electric PC and stash it in your closet. work on mycology experiments in the late hours of the evening.
